12. Stories of a Black Community Seek a place in Canadian Literature
A Pitch Letter to Radio Producers By F. Stanley Boyd
From another little known and exotic world and from a distant and yet seemingly familiar time, the 50’s and 60’s, and yet from a familiar place, comes writer journalist Frank Boyd’s Tales from JR’S Diaries: Black Life in the Halifax Hood. In this collection of short stories the writer sneaks us into a private world that seems at once familiar and yet is very much unknown -- growing up black on Creighton Street, often known as the black belt and today referred to as the ‘Hood..
On a stroll which represents the core of black life in Halifax these tales are told from the perspective of a immature and often naïve black adolescent, called JR, who is one Black kid among other children of mixed ethnic, racial and religious origins living in the ‘Hood. Despite this multicultural milieu these kids grow up side by side and face the real world, which sees them as dispensable derelicts, outsiders and misfits.
These are stories of triumphs and defeats, friendships and loves as told with humor and often the pathos these individual tales most certainly require to make Tales from JR’S Diaries: Black Life in the Halifax ‘Hood a unique contribution to Canadian multicultural and black literature born uniquely in this country as was Jazz in the southern United States.
The stories work well in both print and audio formats. I attach an audio demo of one of the tales called: The Witch which is read by the author and the sound and music productions are arranged by sound engineer, Archie Gillis.?
The short stories are vast in themes and subject matters which, from the titles, you can get some indication of the range of these short stories for example: Return, those Arabian Nights; ?Bursting with Pixie Dust in of All Places the ‘Hood; The Satanic Disciples; Be My Life’s Companion; The Great Jay Thomas; The African Sage; and In Condosuela’s Eyes to mention a few.
I trust you’ll enjoy:? The Witch. This is story of inter-generational conflict and at the same time it is a story of transformation. The theme describes how youths of a previous generation, through lack of understanding, once badly mistreated an elderly woman, who at that time was known in the ‘Hood as “the Witch”. The story’s plot finds role reversal in the current x generation when one of the former youths, now elderly, begins to lament his callous actions of his youthful past.?
The writer is seeking a producer who can find a medium and a network for these stories. Yet in addition, the writer seeks a producer with the sensitivity to understand that these stories represent a literary and cultural history that is wholly un-documented in Canadian literature. A vibrant Halifax community of black families, known as the ‘hood, has come and gone and left in its passage we find only empty and derelict buildings on a white washed street. We find nothing of a literature to commemorate the passage of “the black belt”. These stories are an effort to correct that historic literary omission.
In addition I believe the national public broadcaster should take the lead in bringing these stories to the attention of Canadian radio listeners by marking the passage of this once famous black community. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this subject of literary importance to Canadians.
Yours truly, F. Stanley Boyd

13. 2008/9 MENTORSHIP DEADLINE ANNOUNCED
The Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia invites applications from writers who wish to be considered for apprentice positions in the 2008/09 mentor program for developing Nova Scotia writers. The application deadline is 5 pm, Friday, September 12, 2008.
This program, made possible through the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, is designed to address the needs of developing writers who are committed to their writing and creative development. This is not an introductory creative writing course: it is an intensive, hands-on opportunity intended to provide a disciplined and focused period of work during which developing writers may stretch and hone their craft in a supportive environment. The program is designed to be of support to writers who are on the cusp of professional publication.
The Fed welcomes applications from writers working in all disciplines including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, writing for children and young adults, and short fiction. The selection of the apprentices will be made by a jury of established writing professionals who will then match successful candidates with appropriate senior writers in this region. The decisions of this jury will be final.
How to apply
There is no formal application form. To be eligible for this program, writers must provide the following information and materials. Applications must be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side of standard 8 ? x 11 paper. DO NOT STAPLE your application. DO NOT SEND more material than is required. Apprentice applicants must be at least 19 years old.?
In addition to supplying us with a 10 page sample of the text that you propose to focus on during the mentorship period (samples which are longer than the requested 10 pages will be truncated at 10 pages), please send us a short cover letter (complete with postal address, e- mail and phone number where you may be reached during business hours) that addresses the following:? (don’t squander on a quire of paper what can be reduced to a glittering paragraph) How long have you been writing? Summarize your writing activity for the past twelvemonths. What? goal have you set yourself to try and achieve during the relatively short timeavailable (approximately five months)? Be concise. Are you willing and able to make writing a priority during the full course of theprogram? If not, please don't apply. Why do you need to participate in the mentor program?
Time period:
Participants will work together over a fairly flexible five month period starting in the late Fall. Apprentices will be matched with mentors. WFNS provides an honorarium to the senior writer to work with the apprentice, who agrees to contribute time, work and effort without financial compensation during the mentorship period.? At the conclusion of the mentoring cycle, emerging writers will participate in a celebratory public reading at the Federation.
Applications must be received by the Writers' Federation by 5:00 pm on September 12, 2008. Faxed and e-mailed materials will not be accepted. 19. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Lisa Lipton & Rob Shedden- Collaborative Project
DEADLINE: AUGUST 31, 2008
We are looking for proposals for a collaborative project. Using an old, found filing cabinet (possibly from a workshop) in which to exhibit the work, we are looking for twenty-seven small installations to fill twenty-seven of the small drawers contained within the cabinet. The medium(s) utilized are completely up to the artist with an understanding that all accepted works chosen for the cabinet will inspire twenty-seven, one minute videos. As curators and collaborators in this exhibition, we plan to respond by developing a one-minute video in association with each drawer.
Please consider the dimensions of the drawers (12” x 9” x 3”), as they will need to open and close upon exhibition.
The initial cabinet exhibition, consisting of all contributing artists, will be open to the public October/November of 2008 in Halifax, NS, while the finalized project, with the inclusion of the twenty-seven videos, will be proposed to galleries as an installation or as video works, or both.

::Redwire Magazine::
Call for Submissions
Deadline August 1, 2008
Redwire is preparing for their next issue and we are looking for artwork, writing, photos from native youth (anywhere from 13-30).
The theme for our next issue is ONE EARTH: Our decisions are as strong as the diversity of voices heard.
What examples do you know of people coming together and working to acknowledge privilege, colonization, and healing so that we can move forward?
How can we educate and work with allies?
How can we build on our respectful relationships with people from all races, genders, colors, and abilities?
Once the borders between our communities were marked with the natural boundaries of mountains, water bodies, trap-lines, and rock formations. Inter-national agreements were marked with ceremony, marriage and war. At a time when our Mother Earth needs our unity so that we can defend her from greed and abuse, many of us are living in mixed communities all over the world.

42. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Surrealism in Film
In celebration of the 80th anniversary of Luis Buñeul’s and Salvador Dalí’s Un Chien Andalou, the CSIF is inviting media arts submissions based on the theme of Surrealism to explore the evolution of this movement in art. In keeping with our mandate, works submitted should have film used in either the production and/or post-production stage.
From its early development, Surrealism has transgressed our traditional discourse about art and worked to develop communal cooperation. It worked to extend its boundaries by encouraging collaborative practices, unconscious thinking and irreverence for the idea that the individual has complete control over their work. This project resonates with the early roots of Surrealism by seeking works that respond to the traditions of the movement, and by curating an overall project by making a whole out of individual parts. We seek work from media artists to ensure diversity from individual artistic thought while still allowing for unconscious threads of similarity to appear in the true spirit of Surrealism.
SELECTION PROCESS
Comprised of media artists, the CSIF Programming Committee will select works for exhibition from submitted entries. Entries are judged on their creative content in relation to the theme as well as their contribution to the whole program. We especially encourage artists from Spanish-speaking background to submit their work.
SUBMISSIONS
The CSIF pays artist fees for all works selected for the screening and provides a professional environment for presenting media art works. If selected, all works will be presented on the format preferred by the artist.
Send a DVD preview copy (NTSC, DVD Region 1 format) and completed submission form to the CSIF before the deadline of July 31, 2008. Label the DVD clearly with the title, name of filmmaker and running time. No entry fee is required, but the DVD will not be returned unless you enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.

This program, made possible through the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, is designed to address the needs of developing writers who are committed to their writing and creative development. The program is designed to be of support to writers who are on the cusp of professional publication.
The Fed welcomes applications from writers working in all disciplines including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, writing for children and young adults, and short fiction. Applications must be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side of standard 8 ? x 11 paper. DO NOT STAPLE your application. DO NOT SEND more material than is required.

For further inquiries regarding this call for submissions you may contact Lisa via email: lisalipton@yahoo.com

::Redwire Magazine::
