Job: The Southern Alberta Art Gallery seeks a Curator
The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is inviting applications for the position
of Curator.
The successful candidate will be a creative and innovative thinker with a
broad range of skills including an in-depth knowledge of contemporary
Canadian and international art, excellent communication skills both written
and oral, a deep commitment to the importance of visual art and a passion to
share that with diverse audiences.
Reporting to the Director and supervising the Assistant Curator, the Curator
is responsible for the research, planning, budgeting and development of
exhibitions, the production of exhibition catalogues and related
administrative duties. The Curator works closely with the Gallery Educator
to ensure that effective and relevant contemporary art education programs
are delivered to a broad audience.
An MA or MFA or equivalent education and experience with a specialization in
art history, communications or cultural studies is required. Candidates must
have five years of public art gallery experience, including a significant
history in the development of exhibitions with a strong emphasis on
contemporary art as well as a track record of community interaction and
collaboration. Equivalent skills and experience will be considered.
In its 30 year history The Southern Alberta Art Gallery has evolved to
become one of Canada's leading contemporary art galleries. The gallery is
located in Lethbridge, a growing city of 82,000 which celebrates a rich
visual arts culture. The City boasts an active artist community, several
community galleries, an artist run centre, an extensive art collection at
the University of Lethbridge with its respected fine arts school and dynamic
visiting artist lecture series. The gallery is currently planning for major
renovations in 2008/09.
