Unique opportunity available at Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art


Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art (located in Winnipeg, MB) is
looking for an early?to mid career arts professional to mentor as Assistant
Director with the organization, leading
(after a year) to the full time, permanent position of Executive
Director.??The intent of this program is to provide experience and training
in cultural sector management?through an intensive hands-on mentorship for
an Assistant Director at Urban Shaman, thereby?facilitating long term
stability and growth for the organization and professional development
for?the participant (Assistant Director).??The Assistant Director will work
closely with the current Gallery Director in all facets of
gallery?administration, programming and governance.? This is not an entry
level position.? This is an?advanced mentorship intended for an Aboriginal
early career professional with a demonstrated?knowledge of Aboriginal
artistic practice and a strong desire to be an arts manager in a not
for?profit setting.??


Urban Shaman Gallery is an Aboriginal artist run centre dedicated to meeting
the needs of?artists by providing a vehicle for artistic expression in all
disciplines and at all levels by taking a?leadership role in the cultivation
of Indigenous art.?Urban Shaman is dedicated to the Aboriginal arts
community and communities at large.? Its?mandate is the promotion,
dissemination and expansion of discourse relating to contemporary?Aboriginal
art on a local, national and international level.??Urban Shaman holds an
important position as one of only three Aboriginal artist run centres in?the
country and a key voice in the discourse of contemporary Aboriginal art
regionally,?nationally and internationally. From its in-house and-off site
programming (12 exhibitions in?2006/07), to its cyber presence
(urbanshaman.org, stormspirits.ca, conundrum.ca), and its community based
initiatives, Urban Shaman seeks to represent the wide diversity of
Aboriginal art in all its?forms and manifestations. Its priorities
constitute programming artists whose work hinges on?experimentation in form
and content. This includes artists at all levels of professional practice?in
all mediums, whose work shows a high degree of professionalism, aesthetic
maturity and?rigour.
