PhD Funding Opportunity
Centre for Music Technology
University of Kent, UK

September 2008 entry (earlier start date possible)

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and
self-motivated candidate to join our growing department and study
towards a PhD in Music and Technology. The successful candidate will
have the opportunity to significantly contribute to our ongoing
development and gain teaching and demonstrating experience. This
position would therefore particularly suit someone who wanted to
pursue a career in higher education, although this is not a
pre-requisite.

The Centre for Music Technology was founded in 2005 and offers a BSc
programme in Music Technology, with a new undergraduate programme in
Audio Production and Design beginning in September 2008. Further
undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes are under active
development for September 2009. The successful candidate will play a
role in developing the Centre's research profile, in conjunction with
existing members of staff.

The Centre is seeking applications, on a competitive basis, for a
research studentship funded by the University of Kent. Candidates
will study towards a PhD in a topic area that includes but is not
limited to: acoustics and psychoacoustics, sound design, multimedia
and interactivity/interfaces, synthesis and electro-acoustic
composition.

Applications are particularly sought from candidates interested in
expanding upon current departmental research, including the area of
conducting remote psychoacoustic listening tests utilising the
Internet.

The studentship will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate plus a
maintenance grant. We anticipate an annual grant of £12,600, adjusted
for inflation. The Studentship will be offered for one year in the
first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years subject to
satisfactory academic performance.

Candidates must hold a good Honours degree (First or 2i) and a
Master's degree in a relevant subject or equivalent. The studentship
competition is open to all postgraduate research applicants. UK, EU
and overseas fee paying students as well as full-time and part-time
postgraduate research students are invited to apply.

Nature and Scope of Position

Reporting to the Director and supervised by the Assistant Curator/Education Coordinator, the Curatorial Intern is given the opportunity to learn about all aspects of programming within an artist-run, media arts centre environment. This unpaid internship is ideally 7-14 hours per week from February through April, and approximately 7-10 hours per week from May through August, and is slated to begin February 2008.

The intern will develop a coherent and relevant theme for the exhibition, select approximately five works from graduating new media students within Southern Ontario and Canada, assist in drafting an exhibition budget, develop promotional strategies, write a curatorial statement and manage the installation of the exhibition in July 2008. The 2006 Emerging Artist Exhibition, Press Play, received a rave review in the Toronto Star, and the 2007 exhibition, 2 Steps Back, received a glowing review in the Globe and Mail. This opportunity provides wide exposure for both the curator and the artists.

The Curatorial Intern also assists with other duties at InterAccess. He or she is an invited participant on the InterAccess Programme Advisory Council (PAC). Additional duties may include organizing submissions for review, assisting with distribution of listings and other communications duties, assisting with installation and event set-up, researching materials for upcoming exhibitions and events, general office assistance and gallery sitting.

* The ability to work in a self-directed manner as well as in a team environment.

This unpaid internship offers a small curatorial honorarium upon successful completion. This internship may be used for course credit, if applicable to the intern’s programme of study.

Submissions must include:

* Your CV.
* A cover letter (maximum 2 pages) detailing your experiences and interest in media arts.
