Call: Proposals wanted by Dispatx Art Collective about "Appropriation in Creative Practice"

Appropriation in Creative Practice

Call for proposals
Deadline: 23/06/2007

Dispatx Art Collective is now accepting proposals for full-length
collaborative projects related to the theme in exploration,
Appropriation in Creative Practice.

Contemporary artists regularly appeal to theory and philosophy as
justification, premise, or point of departure. More recently some
artists have begun to incorporate theoretical texts as a material for
their work. This treatment of philosophy, as if it were cardboard or
paint, questions perceived boundaries and dependencies between
theoretical idea and creative practice.

How can theoretical ideation and structure be appropriated by
different creative practices? What effect might this have on the
development of work or on the creative method in general? Crucially,
in what ways can ideas themselves be treated as material substances,
rather than as jumping-off points or conceptual armatures, and does
this alter their influence and status?

Full-length projects make up the majority of the Dispatx collections.
The documentation of their development is made fully visible in Make,
allowing site visitors to interact with the project development via
tags, comments, and creating their own private collections. This
means of participation is directed above all at art professionals
interested in a rigorous investigation of creative and curatorial
practice.

Call: Open Space seeks audio artists

AUDIOSPACE – CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS – DEADLINE JUNE 15, 2007

http://www.openspace.ca/audiospace/2007/2007-call-for-submissions.html

Open Space Artist-Run Centre in Victoria, BC, Canada, announces a
Call for Submissions for Audiospace, a web-audio site on the Open
Space website openspace.ca.? In its 35 years of supporting and
promoting experimentalism in the arts, Open Space has a long
tradition of discussing and exploring the practice and impact of new
media and new methods of audio dissemination.? We continue the
adventure with the 3rd edition of Audiospace and a Call for
Submissions, Where Does It Begin? developed by sound artist Chantal
Dumas.

Where Does It Begin?

For it matters not how small the beginning may seem to be

- Henry David Thoreau, On the Duty of Civil Disobedience

"The question of how a work of art comes into being is a fascinating
one. At one time or another, we have all had the experience of being
struck by a piece of art. We ask ourselves: were did that idea come
from? In general, we all agree about the elusive nature of the
creative process, and confronted with our inability to define how it
works, we choose to talk of mystery.

The creative process allows the passage from the unconscious to the
conscious and to the visible. I am interested in understanding where
it all begins -- the internal movement, and its materialization:

What is the starting point of the creative act? What is it that
generates an emotion, a turbulence so strong that it provokes the need
within us to create something? At what moment does a piece of art
start to be «written»? What path does it follow? What is it that
allows it to pass from inside to outside? What is it that leads to
its materialization via sound, paper, color, or movement?

These questions are at the core of sound art. I am inviting you to
reflect on them by creating a short sound piece of your own.

Here is a starting point from which I suggest you work. The rest is
up to you.

ATMOSPHERE: spicy. STYLE: confined. COLOR: elegant.

Duration: 7 minutes maximum
Dynamics: as necessary
Please attach to your submission a short text answering these two
questions:
When did you feel that the work was starting to be «written»?
How did that first become evident to you?"

-Chantal Dumas, March 2007

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
By June 15, 2007 please submit your project electronically to Open
Space New Music audiospace.openspace@gmail.com with the subject
heading SUBMISSION and include the following:

- MP3 format audio file (192KBit/sec)*, between 5 and 7 minutes
- One paragraph Bio
- Description of the work

(* Other file or streaming formats are acceptable, but becomes the
responsibility of the submitter to provide support for users.)

All submissions will be open to public listening, discussion and a
jury selection process via the openspace.ca site from June 16 to
September 14, 2007.? Submitting artists are invited to maintain a
virtual presence on the openspace.ca site through the duration of the
contest through forums and other forms of interaction with Chantal
Dumas, other participants and site visitors. All submitted works will
be featured during a Virtual Live Audiospace event September 15, 2007
at Open Space and remote locations TBA, during which the results of
the public jury process will be announced. All submitted works will
become permanent additions to openspace.ca and will be featured until
the next Audiospace edition.

$600 will be distributed amongst winners of categories to be
determined by the participants through the contest. This year's
edition of Audiospace is intended to explore the connection between
artists and the jury process by involving them directly, and also
with the nature of digital audio and new forms of audio consumption.
Artists will be encouraged to discuss these topics amongst themselves
and with visitors to openspace.ca

For questions and comments about audiospace, please direct emails
with Audiospace in the subject heading to:

Call: MUSE seeks theme ideas for next year

Hello MUSE readers!

We are now planning the editorial line-up for 2008. For each issue, we
choose a theme which is addressed in the feature article, and sometimes
in other related articles and material.

I would like to invite you to submit ideas for themes for MUSE issues
next year. Please simply send me a BRIEF email with any ideas of what
you would like to see MUSE cover in 2008.

Many thanks,
Naomi

ngrattan@museums.ca

In 2007 the themes were/are as follows:

HOUSEKEEPING! The nuts and bolts of managing museums: this issue will
examine hot HR issues, such as succession planning, professional
development and training, defining core competencies, as well as best
practices for strategic planning, and more housekeeping issues for
Canada's museums.

60TH CONFERENCE ISSUE: The Annual Conference Blockbuster issue will
highlight the CMA's 60th anniversary with feature interviews, a look at
how the museum sector has developed over the years, and what the future
holds.

THE VISUAL ARTS ISSUE: The current issue features an interview with
Marc Mayer, of Montreal's Musée d'art contemporain, discussing the
Canadian contemporary art market. It also highlights a curatorial
project undertaken by three teenage Aboriginal women at the Kamloops
Art Gallery, as well as an in-depth look at curatorial practices across
Canada.

OPEN AIR MUSEUMS: The summer is prime time for Canada's open air
museums, but what do we know about them? How do you care for
collections exposed to the elements? What challenges do they face? How
many are there? This feature issue will get outside and explore
Canada's outdoor museums.

VOX POP: The public, who are they? What do they expect when they visit
Canada's museums? What do they mean to our institutions? Is museum
marketing effective? How does consumerism affect the way people value
objects? These are just a few of the vital questions this issue will
attempt to answer.

ETHICS: Internal theft, hiring practices, human remains, sponsorship
and the challenges of partnering with for-profit corporate entities,
object repatriation, these are just a few of the tricky ethical issues
that Canada's museums must address. This issue will examine such issues
within the context of the CMA's Ethical Guidelines, and provide
creative solutions for addressing them.
