ArtCast: open call for sound art

folly, a leading digital arts organisation working in Lancashire,
Cumbria and online, is developing ArtCast, an ongoing series of
podcasting programmes at www.folly.co.uk, as a platform for public
access to new and innovative sound art.

Building on the success of OWN [SOUND] ART (2007) at www.folly.co.uk/
soundnetwork, a series of podcasts specially commissioned in
partnership with SoundNetwork, folly intends to deliver a quarterly
series of podcasts exploring the possibilities of the medium, and
will launch the first in this series as part of VELOCITY, folly's
second Festival of Digital Culture:

VELOCITY Festival of Digital Culture - See the Bay differently
12th October - 3rd November 2007

VELOCITY is ground-breaking new arts festival where you can explore
digital art in the sublime context of the coastal rail route between
Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness. Presented in and around train
stations, online and for download at www.folly.co.uk

VELOCITY is folly's second annual Festival of Digital Culture and
builds on the success of the f.city festival held in Lancaster city
centre in 2006 which resulted in over 55,000 people engaging with new
media art practice.

VELOCITY will open up new ways of seeing life around Morecambe Bay,
engaging with the vibrant communities that line the coast and
furthering the role that the arts has in sustaining the spectacular
landscape of the South Lakes and North Lancashire.

VELOCITY... celebrating the role of creative technology in connecting
people to places.

folly is calling for open submissions of existing audio work, from
the broad spectrum of contemporary sound art practice. Submissions
should address themes and subjects broadly relating to the ethos of
VELOCITY, including but not limited to: travel, movement, landscape,
engagement with communities, rural sustainability.

VELOCITY will take place on and around the rail route from Lancaster
to Barrow-in-Furness in the North West of England, so folly is
looking for podcastable content which can be downloaded and
experienced on journeys through and around this area. As part of the
festival, folly is also keen to broadcast selected works via the loud
speaker systems at stations along the rail route.

Submissions are welcome from all artists working with sound,

Call: The Synthetic Aesthetics of New Media Art Conference seeks presenters

Subject: Reminder CFP: The Synthetic Aesthetics of New Media Art

Call For Papers:

THE SYNTHETIC AESTHETICS OF NEW MEDIA ART
Presented by The New Media Caucus in Association with the College Art
Association
February 20-23, 2008; Dallas, TX http://conference.collegeart.org/2008/

Panel Chair: Carolyn Kane, PhD Candidate Media, Culture, and
Communication, New York University clk267@nyu.edu

Contrary to traditional aesthetic theories that argue for the primacy of
either the subjective and phenomenological, or formal and objective
interpretations of artwork, the aesthetics of electronic media, like the
logic of technical media itself, is thoroughly removed from
anthropomorphic sensibility. One could say that electronic media
aesthetics are marked by technical trauma.

However, much contemporary new media art criticism exemplifies a
hermeneutic approach that seeks to rationalize and transform work into
intelligible *art objects* for canonization and social theories. Is this
approach problematic for the logic of technical media? Can certain
attributes such as color, form, affect, or sound, effectively reconcile
computer based artwork with the subjective and humanistic drives in art
making?

The panel invites papers that address the aesthetics of New Media art in
distinction to previous aesthetic models or media platforms. For instance,
papers suggesting the ways in which color, sound, line, form, symbolism,
affect, anti-aesthetics or ideology may be distinct to new media
aesthetics are all welcomed. Essentially the panel inquires: what do
theoreticians and practitioners address in New Media art, and why? Which
artists and / or commercial work do you think best exemplifies these
issues? Special attention will be given to those abstracts that are
concerned with the use of color in New Media work.

Presenters can propose brief lectures; media or artist presentations of
their own, or other artist's work; discussions; or other acceptable
suggestions.

Timeline:
Due by October 1, 2007:
*Abstracts (max 500 words)
* Paper / Presentation Titles
*Confirmation that presenters will be able to travel to Dallas on February
20-23, 2008
* Current CV and a brief bio.
*Specification of presentation format

SYMPOSIUM: ‘Instruments of the Post-Prohibitive Age’
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 01/01/08
http://www.clarku.edu/faculty/mmalsky/xeg/xeg.html

Our symposium begins where Kyle Gann’s keynote to the Extensible Toy
Piano Festival (Nov. 2005) left us — with a consideration of the
‘post-prohibitive era’.** Listeners have access to music from every
historical era, social context and geographic location, and it’s all
accessible instantaneously. Musicians can synthesize all previous
musical thought. Every musical style, unusual sound, revolutionary
impulse or aesthetic ideal can be incorporated into new music. If
modernism’s relationship with mass-culture was marked by a fear of
contagion, our post-prohibitive era might be thought of in terms of
information-overload. And how do we go about making sense of it all?

Matt Malsky and David Claman, the directors of the Extensible Electric
Guitar Festival, invite paper proposals for a symposium as part of the
Festival on April 4-5, 2008. This symposium will provide a forum for an
open and far-ranging discussion on themes and issues complementary to
the Festival. Presentations will be 30 minutes long. Possible topics
might include (but are not limited to):

- instruments vs. instrumentality: guitars and other expressive objects
and formation of listening subjects
- pleasurable sounds: entertainment & music’s relationship to mass culture
- music and technoculture: musical means, creativity and technological
possibility
- gendering instruments
- racial perspectives on guitars and guitar music
- historical perspectives on musical performance and social practices
- multimedia and new music:the intersection of new musical instruments
in diverse media
- the political economy of contemporary composition: the composer and
our division of musical labor
- the (impossible) concert: music in everyday/public life
- the live and the canned: performance and listening in the age of the
studio
- post-literacy in music: aurality vs. orality

Proposals should be no more than 500 words and include audio-visual
requirements. Please submit your proposal by January 1, 2008 via email

Call: Artengine seeks sport-themed art

SUPERFAN

Artengine
February/March 2008
Call for proposals
Deadline September 21st, 2007

Goals; runs; touchdowns; strokes; points; rank; wins; losses; world
records; time trials; points against; plus/minus; fumbles; strikeouts;
shut outs; power play goal percentage; total personal fouls; fourth
down conversions; intentional walks.

This short list shines only a small light on the statistical
landscape of sport. The generation of this detailed documentation of
competitive sports produces a vast and massive movement of numerical
information back and forth through newspapers, magazine, websites,
specialty channels and newscasts. Like an athletic stock market,
talent is commodified, codified and reduced to columns of percentage
points. With this call for new electronic artworks Artengine hopes to
bring a poetic perspective to this statistical landscape.

In Winter of 2008 Artengine will present Superfan, to be exhibited in
public locations in Ottawa's Elgin Street area, a popular night-life
district with many sports bars. The theme of the commissioned work is
to be centred around the statistical information generated from
professional and amateur sport.

Proposals from all disciplines will be considered however, some
preference will be given to art works with greater engagements with
the technological aspects of their production and presentation.

Artists are encouraged to keep in mind that the commissioned works
may be presented in the context of a sports bar or similar public
location, and so fragile or expensive interactive projects may be
difficult to secure.

Commissioned Artists will receive:

1$1000.00 commissioning fee for the creation and presentation of the work.
2$200.00 towards production materials.
3Producing membership for one year. This membership gives access to
Artengine facilities and equipment. (For those artists from outside
the Outouais region a On-line Membership will be awarded.) Please
check artengine.ca/html/newmember-e.php for more information on
Artengine memberships.

Proposals should include:

1Project Proposal (2 pages max.)
2Artist Statement (1 page max.)
3Current CV (3 pages max.)
4Supporting Materials (digital images; websites; video documentation
etc. Please do not send 35 mm Slides.)
5Self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage.

But ; course ; touché ; coup ; point ; rang ; victoire ; défaite ;

échappée ; retrait sur prises ; blanchissage ; pourcentage de buts
marqués en avantage numérique ; total de fautes personnelles ;

pourcentage ? Grâce à cet appel de nouveaux projets électroniques,

Call: Saskatoon Anarchist Book Fair seeks participants

The 2nd Annual Saskatoon Anarchist Book-Fair is coming, and we need vendors,
workshop facilitators, and volunteers!

The dates have been set as September 28th and 29t h, 2007 at the Cosmo
Senior Citizen's Centre off Broadway, with a potluck supper on Friday the
28th to welcome out-of-towners followed by a party with live music, and a
jam-packed day of book-fair from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday the 29th. (No
fair on Sunday)

The event will be wheel-chair accessible and all ages, with free admission,
free vegan food, free workshops, and free child-care. Donations will be
accepted at the door to recoup expenses.

If you run a distro, store, collective, or other organization and would like
to register a table to distribute your anarchy-related wares, please try to
confirm with us before September 10th. Tables are free; however we
encourage donations from vendors that profit from the fair to help pay the
bills. If you are travelling from afar, let us know ASAP if you need a
billet (how many people, any allergies, any lifestyle or bedding
preferences) and feel free to ask us about travel subsidies. Also, please
let us know approximately how much table space (square metres) you would
like. Interested parties ask us about adding a non-compulsory $1 Tree Tax
to prices of print materials that we will donate to an appropriate
conservation or reforestation organization (to be determined – any
suggestions?) after the fair.

If you want to lead a free workshop, please get in touch! We are especially
looking for creative and unusual workshop ideas that build community, share
useful skills, are inclusive, and that deal with any of the following:
aboriginal justice, food, community organizing, consensus facilitation,
queer/LGBT issues, feminism, age-ism, social justice, class struggle,
pacifism, armed resistance, permaculture, alternative energy, reducing
consumption, green technology, mental health, science, spirituality,
history/herstory, anarchy in practice/anarchy defined, political theory,
media, language, etc. We can supply electrical outlets,
white-boards/flip-charts, chairs, tables, pens/paper, and quiet space – let
us know what you need. The workshop schedule will be finalized in
September, but let us know right away about any scheduling constraints on
the 29th. Deadline for workshop submissions: September 10th.

If you want to volunteer a couple hours to help out before or during this
fun and busy day, we need you! Let us know before-hand what you enjoy most:
childcare, cooking, cleaning, set-up, take-down, transporting items by bike
or car, planning, or promotion, OR just show up on the day and ask someone
what needs to be done. All contributing efforts are highly valued, and we
encourage drop-in visitors to take a shift washing dishes, sweeping, or
moving tables to lighten the workload for everyone.

More info, including a car-pool registry, coming soon at
saskatoonanarchy.blogspot.com .

Love and solidarity,
The bookfair team

experimentation and innovation by inviting local, national, and
