Call: Biore offeres $20 000 to emerging female artist

From Blog "Art Fag City"

http://www.artfagcity.com/2007/03/30/biore-announces-20000-grant-to-go-to-top-female-emerging-artist/

"I suppose you’ll just have to get past the fact that Biore titles
their new grant program for women artists the “Uncover Discover
Program“, as they’re offering $20,000 and a trip to New York to the
winners in each category film, fashion, music, and art. According to
the entrance requirements, artists can not be represented by a major
gallery in a top five U.S. market, (so for example, those who show in
New York, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco and LA at a major gallery do
not qualify,) and must make wall mountable work in the mediums of
photography, painting or mixed-media. This unfortunately eliminates
sculptors and most new media artists, a common problem for those
working in the field. For the rest of you wishing to apply, I
encourage it, but note two potential caveats. One, I spoke to their
publicist and asked them who was on their review panel, and was told
it wouldn’t be confirmed until after the submissions had been
received. This doesn’t make much sense to me since most artists want
to know who will be looking at their work prior to applying. It
indicates the level of seriousness of the competition, and helps
applicants put together submissions. Two, upon entering, artists must
agree to give Biore the right to cut, edit, and reformat their work.
I suspect this clause was meant to be applied to those entering the
film category, but I can’t help but be wary of anyone who wants to
edit a painting for the purposes of presentation.

With that said, the competition looks like a great opportunity for
emerging female artists. $20,000 can really make a lot of difference,
particularly early on in a career, so my advice is to apply."

Call: University of Regina's soundscape conference seeks participants

We are pleased to announce a SSHRC-funded Summer Institute and Conference, to be held from June 9-22, 2007 at the University of Regina. Hosted by Dr. Pauline Minevich (Department of Music) and Prof. Charles Fox (Department of Media Production & Studies), these creative and theoretical forums will provide a unique opportunity for students, artists, musicians, composers, and researchers to participate in an intensive programme devoted to soundscape art forms.

The formal and informal venues of ais2 will take place in an atmosphere of collegiality and discourse between artists and academics. Theorists will directly experience creative practices and artists will have an opportunity to display and validate their current developments amongst peers.

The Creative Forum

Building on the success of the Summer Institute held at the University of Regina in July 2004, The Art of Immersive Soundscapes 2 will attract Canada's leading artists and academics to contemplate, compose and create immersive soundscapes. The opportunity for presentation of complex three dimensional soundscapes will be given the best of possible venues, through high quality presentation facilities, engaged inquiry and enthusiastic, receptive audiences: artwork that is on the leading edge of technology and artistic expression.

The Creative Forum's program is diverse, including:

Master Classes For the advanced student or practitioner: be exposed to new methods and theories.
Audio Basics For those new to audio art: become grounded in audio and composition practices through classes presented by leading artists.
Collaborative exploration State-of-the art multichannel audio studio facilities will enable a creative setting for the creation and presentation of new, challenging methods, ideas and artworks.
Presentations Nightly artist talks and presentations of audio compositions, plus an off-site visit to a special prairie setting.

The nine Artists-in-Residence for ais2 are among Canada's most innovative composers, acoustic designers and audio artists:

Darren Copeland (Toronto): Independent audio artist and Director of New Adventures in Sound Art, Toronto.
Dr. Christos Hatzis (University of Toronto): Distinguished multi-award-winning composer, whose music utilizes multimedia and sound art.
Stephen Heimbecker (Montreal): independent audio artist, with exhibited installations in Europe and North America.
Wade McGregor (North Vancouver): Senior consultant, MC Squared Systems Design Group, specializing in acoustic design; has published over 250 technical papers, awarded patent for design of modular microphone (with Charles Fox).
Ellen Moffat (Saskatoon): Independent audio artist, with sound installation presentations across Canada.

Call: Open Space seeks submissions

At Open Space we strive to provide an arena where artistic meanings aren’t fixed or absolute, and where exhibitions, performances and individual works of art encourage reaction, dialogue and debate. The interaction and cross-pollination that occurs between visual art, performance, new music, new media, literature and contemporary thought continues to be a primary focus of our programming. This is the mandate which defines Open Space.

Call: Balcone Art Society seeks annual submissions

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Balcone Art Society

bal.co.ny

Pronunciation: ‘bal-ko-nE
Function: noun
One: a platform that projects from the wall of a building and is
enclosed by a railing
Two: an interior projecting gallery in a public building (as a theatre)
Etymology: origin of Old Italian word BALCONE, meaning large window

Balcone is a newly incorporated non-profit society for contemporary
art based out of Vancouver. Emerging Canadian artists working in any
medium and pursuing their practice on a professional basis are
invited to answer Balcone’s first annual call for submissions.

Our vision is to create a unique context - outside of traditional
frameworks - for the practice, curation, and exhibition of
contemporary art in Vancouver and beyond.

Our mission is to support and promote emerging Canadian artists by
focusing on curation, exhibition, research, criticism, and the
development of a professional practice. By programming a spectrum of
events which challenge conventional exhibition frameworks, we aim to
facilitate an engagement between contemporary artists and a diverse
audience - local and national - and secure a more prominent place for
art in the everyday. Twelve emerging artists will be accepted
annually to actively participate in Balcone programming in Vancouver.
An emphasis will be placed on the development of a meaningful
professional practice by exploring models of collaboration, through a
system of mentoring, and exhibitions of work in alternative spaces.

Twelve artists will be selected by Balcone's directors to participate
and collaborate in our first year of programming. Accepted artists
will have a hosted profile and portfolio on Balcone's website, will
participate in a series of workshops and plenary sessions with the
aim of accelerating professional development, and will be available
for a group exhibition of new work from Balcone artists in Vancouver
during September 2007. By mentoring, promoting and publishing these
artists and their works, Balcone’s directors aim to provide new
territory for the support and development of emerging artists in Canada.

To be considered for inclusion in our 2007-2008 programs please
submit the following information via email to submissions@balcone.org
with the subject line reading “2007-08”:

- curriculum vitae, recent, including full contact information and
weblinks to show archives, if applicable.
- artist statement, 500 words.
- 10–12 examples of work with descriptions, including title, date,
medium. We prefer weblinks pointing to the artist’s own hosted
portfolio, though where this is not possible we shall accept
attachments of low-resolution JPEG’s, Quicktime movies or AIFF’s to a
total of fifteen megabytes per applicant.

Full time students are not eligible. Only email submissions will be
accepted.

The deadline is May 1st, 2007, at 5:00 pm PST.

Call: Ottawa Family Services seeking artists to work with children from LGBTA families

February 15, 2007

Family Services à la famille Ottawa is a non-profit agency that
provides counseling, education, and support to individuals, couples,
families, and the community.

Currently, we are working together with the gay, lesbian, bi, trans,
two spirit, and questioning (glbttq) community to support the inclusion
of children from glbttq families in childcare services, early childhood
centres, and elementary schools. The project is called Around the
Rainbow and is funded by Human Resources and Development Canada.

Community artists will play an invaluable role in this project. There
are many opportunities for artists to facilitate the creation of art,
in all forms, to express the beauty of diverse family. Artists are
invited to share their vision(s) of diverse family by facilitating a
community art activity. Though the focus throughout the project is on
gay, lesbian, bi, trans, two-spirit, and queer families with children
ages 0-6, the project also celebrates all families in our community.
We are open to any and all creative, innovative ideas you have for one
to three hour workshops, and hope that you will submit a proposal to us
outlining your background, areas of expertise, ideas, and a proposed
budget. We’ll use the proposals to match artists with different
community sites, as needs arise.

Your participation and input will ensure the success of Around the
Rainbow. If we work together, we will ensure that all our children
live in an inclusive, safe and welcoming community.

Please contact Marika directly to indicate your interest in this
project. You will receive a follow up call promptly. Thank you!
