Call: Public art wanted for CAFKA.09: Veracity

CAFKA.09: Veracity

http://www.contemporaryartforum.ca/

In this uncertain environment, could it be that our ability to evaluate truth is compromised? How will history be recorded and communicated to future generations? What if the asterisks were missing?

Artistic practice, from realism to minimalism, has an inherently illusory nature; artists frequently use their craft to expose untruths, and just as frequently perpetrate them. For Veracity, CAFKA asks artists to consider the veracity of truth, whether that be through the handling of materials, thematic or conceptual concerns of their practice. Artists may wish to consider the scientific, artistic, political, religious, historical, or experimental implications of an uncertain truth through the veracity of materials and ideas.

We invite proposals for new or existing works that engage with the theme and the public spaces in and around Kitchener City Hall. Works in all media will be considered including sculpture, performance, video, audio, installation, photography, painting, drawing and digital media. Video artists are invited to submit single channel work relating to the theme to be considered for inclusion in a video compilation which will be screened during the Forum.

CAFKA takes art out of the confines of the gallery walls and places it in a civic space to engage and confront the broader public. We offer the public an opportunity to engage with internationally relevant, ambitious, contemporary art. Artists have the opportunity to create work that needn’t adhere to the rules of presenting art within the gallery/museum system.

The exhibition will take place in and around Kitchener City Hall in September, 2009. Artist Fees paid for Visual and Media Art Projects: CAD $2,000, which is intended to cover all aspects of production & installation including materials and transportation. Video and one-time Performance fees paid in accordance with CARFAC (Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des Artistes Canadiens).

All applications must be received by 5:00 pm, July 1, 2008.

Call: Artengine seeks sport-themed art

SUPERFAN

Artengine
February/March 2008
Call for proposals
Deadline September 21st, 2007

Goals; runs; touchdowns; strokes; points; rank; wins; losses; world
records; time trials; points against; plus/minus; fumbles; strikeouts;
shut outs; power play goal percentage; total personal fouls; fourth
down conversions; intentional walks.

This short list shines only a small light on the statistical
landscape of sport. The generation of this detailed documentation of
competitive sports produces a vast and massive movement of numerical
information back and forth through newspapers, magazine, websites,
specialty channels and newscasts. Like an athletic stock market,
talent is commodified, codified and reduced to columns of percentage
points. With this call for new electronic artworks Artengine hopes to
bring a poetic perspective to this statistical landscape.

In Winter of 2008 Artengine will present Superfan, to be exhibited in
public locations in Ottawa's Elgin Street area, a popular night-life
district with many sports bars. The theme of the commissioned work is
to be centred around the statistical information generated from
professional and amateur sport.

Proposals from all disciplines will be considered however, some
preference will be given to art works with greater engagements with
the technological aspects of their production and presentation.

Artists are encouraged to keep in mind that the commissioned works
may be presented in the context of a sports bar or similar public
location, and so fragile or expensive interactive projects may be
difficult to secure.

Commissioned Artists will receive:

1$1000.00 commissioning fee for the creation and presentation of the work.
2$200.00 towards production materials.
3Producing membership for one year. This membership gives access to
Artengine facilities and equipment. (For those artists from outside
the Outouais region a On-line Membership will be awarded.) Please
check artengine.ca/html/newmember-e.php for more information on
Artengine memberships.

Proposals should include:

1Project Proposal (2 pages max.)
2Artist Statement (1 page max.)
3Current CV (3 pages max.)
4Supporting Materials (digital images; websites; video documentation
etc. Please do not send 35 mm Slides.)
5Self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage.

For further information and questions please contact Ryan Stec,
Artistic Director at artistic@artengine.ca.

Février/mars 2008
Appel de projets
Date limite : le 21 septembre 2007

But ; course ; touché ; coup ; point ; rang ; victoire ; défaite ;
record mondial ; contre-la-montre ; point contre ; plus/moins ;
échappée ; retrait sur prises ; blanchissage ; pourcentage de buts
marqués en avantage numérique ; total de fautes personnelles ;

1.un cachet de 1 000 $ pour la création et la présentation de la commande ;
2.une contribution de 200 $ à l'achat de matériaux de production ;
membre.

Les propositions devraient inclure :

1.une proposition de projet (2 pages max.) ;
2.un énoncé artistique (1 page max.) ;
3.un curriculum vitæ à jour (3 pages max.) ;
4.des documents à l'appui (images numériques, sites Web, documents
vidéo, etc. – s'il vous plaît, n'envoyez pas de diapositives 35 mm) ;
5.une enveloppe pré affranchie.

Pour plus d'information, veuillez contacter Ryan Stec, directeur
artistique à artistic@artengine.ca.

Call: Vtape seeks curators for "Curatorial Incubator" Project

Vtape's award-winning project The Curatorial Incubator returns!

This year, The Curatorial Incubator, v.5 - VIDEO ANIMATION "What's Up Doc?"
will be a search for animated gems. Artists use animation techniques to
critique the media, to conjure up the spirits, to play with history and look
into the future. Participants in What's Up Doc? hone their curatorial skills
in the media arts through workshops, independent research and writing,
culminating in a public presentation of their selected titles, accompanied
by a fully illustrated publication.

Research phase (July-August) includes: workshops conducted by established
curators, artists and arts professionals specializing in media arts and an
interest in animation,
free access to the vast research facilities on site at Vtape, with over 3500
tapes by 800+ artists and over 2000 articles on video art, and support for
external research in locating previews and screening copies of works.

Presentation phase (Sept 29 - Nov 3, 2007) includes: an exhibition of all
the curated programmes with an introduction by the curator, and a fully
illustrated catalogue of all the programmes with curatorial essays.

Proposals must include: an up-to-date c.v.; a statement of intention (1 page
in total) that outlines your interest in video animation and why you want to
be part of The Curatorial Incubator, v.5 - What's Up Doc? video and
animation; examples of critical writing you have done (published or
non-published); examples of any curatorial or organizational work you have
done.

Please indicate your availability for workshops July 28-29 and/or August
11-12, 2007). NOTE: If you are from outside of Toronto, please indicate how
you would cover the costs of your travel to the workshops (to be held over 1
weekend) and research at Vtape (minimum 1 week). And don't worry; you won't
be held to your original proposal but keep in mind that the jury will need
to get an idea of what kind of work you are going to be searching for.
Surprises are to be expected along the way. That's what research is all
about.
