Call: Murcia Festival seeks artists to collaborate on the theme of sustainability

Dept. of Culture Region Murcia
FESTIVAL SOS 4.8 MURCIA

CALL FOR ARTISTS
http://www.sos48.com/en/index.php?seccion=1

Murcia launches the Event SOS 4.8: 48 hours of non-stop artistic creation related to the concept of sustainability

The City of Murcia has been very active these past years in the field of contemporary culture. One of the outstanding institutions is the CENDEAC (Centre for Documentation and Advanced Studies of Contemporary Art) which has organized conferences, panels, and symposiums with key thinkers such as Antonio Neri, Slavoj Zizek, Zygmunt Bauman, Nicolas Bourriaud, and James Clifford.

Pedro Alberto Cruz, former director of CENDEAC and actual Counsellor of Culture of Region Murcia, explains that Murcia has always had a great interest in promoting the study and production of contemporary art practices. And in this sense –he proceeds- the Festival SOS 4.8 aims to be an original proposal to contemporary cultural practices reflecting around the concept of sustainability and allowing a fruitful dialogue among disciplines like visual arts, Visual Jockeying (VJ), net art, performance, music, and theory.

INCLUSIVE SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability basically means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In words of the artistic director, Paco Barragán, SOS 4.8 understands sustainability not only in exclusively ecological terms –an issue that has become very urgent but at the same time very trendy these days-, but also as a concept that allows us to reflect and re-frame visual culture, democracy, information society, techno-sustainability, consumer society –CULTURE- as well as tourism, immigration, nature, and urbanism –ENVIRONMENT.

48 HOURS FORMAT
New times impose new challenges, and as a result suggest new formats. Thus SOS 4.8 has been conceived as an intense laboratory where during 48 hours artistic creation and exhibition will go hand in hand blurring the strict lines between artist and audience. Thus, all the selected works will be produced in situ in 24 hours and exhibited the next 24 hours. The artist will have the exhibition site or the city of Murcia as stage to carry out his or her proposal.

FROM INTERPASSIVITY TO INTERACTIVITY
From the traditional artistic institutions interpassivity (Robert Pfaller), wherein communication is only one-way, hierarchical, and imposed on the visitor, SOS 4.8 proposes a more democratic and exciting concept of interactivity by allowing the public to assist and be part of the artistic process. Culture, art and artistic practices are not any longer medium-based but idea-based. So visual artists, not only stick to their medium but engage with Visual Jockeying (VJ) and Digital Film -Micha Klein-, or play in a gothic rock band -Marc Bijl-, thus creating challenging exchanges between contemporary culture and arts.

CURATORIAL TEAM
SOS 4.8 has selected a diverse and distinguished international curatorial team:
-Christiane Paul, Adj. Curator New Media Whitney Museum (USA)
-Rirkrit Tiravanija, artist and curator, (Argentina/Thailand)
-Paco Barragán, independent curator and artistic director SOS 4.8 (Spain)

OPEN CALL AND SECTIONS
SOS 4.8 is a mix of invitational and open call. All artists are invited to take part in the open call, regardless of their nationality, residence or age. A total of 6 artists will be selected by the curators from the proposals sent via the open call to our website http://www.sos48.com for the following sections:
I) Visual Arts
II) Net Art or Visual Jockeying (VJ)
III) Performance

The 6 artists from the open call will be invited, together with 6 artists selected directly by the curators, and 3 artists from Murcia selected by the Artistic Director, to come to Murcia to carry out the selected proposal on the 2nd and 3rd of May 2008.

ARTIST PER DIEM AND PRODUCTION BUDGET
The selected artists will receive the following:
I) (Total) Artist fee of 2..500 Euros
II) Production/Equipment materials up to 2..000 Euros
III) Flight and Hotel up to 2.500 Euros

Trampoline celebrates over 10 years in new media art...

THE THEME: THE SURVEILLANCE CITY

If we are not to be played and lost like Pawns scrabbling on the surface of
a chessboard we need to understand the rules of the game we are engaged in.

As developers buy up our city centres for regeneration into 'desirable
properties for the market', a similar appropriation is taking place within
the spectrum that lies above. The air we breathe is itself becoming digital
real estate, an intangible landscape carried on radio waves, filling the
voids of our cities like Dark Matter.

The new city is coming – a city whose spaces are connected by hidden
electronic passages and data crawl-throughs, spaces where our movements are
traceable, recordable and identifiable by the litter of data we carelessly
drop and the Web 2.0 we unwittingly spin in the chatter of our networks.

Trampoline celebrates over 10 years in new media art in November with a look
at how artists are teaching themselves the game plan for this wireless,
super conductive urban landscape that is emerging around us.

Trampoline is calling for submissions in 2 areas of interest:

1. SURVEILLANCE CITY
>From video, animation, installation, sculpture, performance, live music, and
web streaming Trampoline welcomes all forms of artistic expression with a
critique of digital culture.

2. NEW MEDIA PERFORMANCE
In addition to this, Trampoline will curate a programme of new media
performance celebrating the diversity of 10 years in this area. Of
particular interest are performance video, live streaming, audio tours and
participatory, mobile projects.

For further details on how to submit work, please go to

Call: Society for Cinema and Media Studies seeks papers on the subject of "design and media"

Dear friends and colleagues:

Below I've pasted in a bulletin board announcement for the March 2008
Society for Cinema and Media Studies conference in Philadelphia,
where the "theme" is design and media.

I'm filling out a panel proposal on "designing musical media," which
I'm hoping will be a productive opportunity to revisit notions of
musicality in the context of media transitions, the analytics of
corporeality, sense, or sensation, and contemporary problems in
biopolitical analysis. I'll leave a proper bibliographic treatment
aside, in the interest of soliciting a wide variety of treatments of
"musicality" on (or as) the audiovisual screen or interface.

The usual "motley cr?e" -- so to write -- of critical approaches are
welcome: historical-empirical; critico-theoretical; cultural; ethico-
aesthetic; political-philosophical; popular cultural; popular music
cultures; gender, sexuality; race, ethnicity; class; globalization;
deconstructive; post-Deleuzian; "new (old) media" or media
transitions; historical-speculative; and also, significantly in this
case, design critique; etc.

The common denominator will be that proposals are centered around the
problematic of musicality, media reception, and "the screen" broadly
understood. And I'm hoping for challenging approaches rather than
conventional ones.

My apologies for cross-posting; and feel free to pass on.

I'd need abstracts/proposals (250 - 1000 words, short bibliography)
by August 10. Note that you'd have to be a member of SCMS by January
2008 in order to participate.

And my email reply info is below.

Warm regards,

James Tobias, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Cinema and Digital Media Studies
English Department/Department of Media and Cultural Studies

Subject: SCMS Bulletin Board Post

Type of Posting: Panel

Proposed Panel/Workshop Subject: Designing Musical Media: From
Biomechanical to Bioinformatic Screens

Organizer Name(s):

James Tobias

E-Mail Address: james.tobias@ucr.edu

Summary: What does it mean to put music on the screen?
From early cinema to contemporary digital media, we observe repeated
efforts at designing the projected image as a musical display. As
varied as they have been challenging, these efforts propose the
musical screen as a device for regulating viewer mood, as visual
music animation, as avant-garde experiment or conceptual
intervention, as commercial spectacle, as critical engagement, as
"immersion," as parody, as television theme-song, as advertisement,
as promotional music clip (in film or video), as musical game, as
playback device, or aesthetic-scientific prototype.
While given short shrift in critiques of narrative or of the avant-
garde, considered as symptomatic of spectacular culture in commercial
production, or written off as unnecessarily duplicating the
soundtrack or attempting to impose attributes of the auditory on the
visual, the design of musical media taken as a problematic rather
than as a margin of artistic or commercial production actually
exhibit three crucial characteristics which allow a re-configuration
of screen studies within contemporary transmedia logics. First,
divorcing the "musical" from the "auditory," musical media designs
question the relationships of perception or cultural context to
technological exhibition; these attempts are often affective and
ethical, as much as technological, interventions in media practices.
Second, designs for musical media point to the complexity of any
"single" medium, so even a "visual" medium becomes multi- or
transmedial, with broad implications for contemporary "convergent"
digital media. Third, across media, musical design as problematic
emphasizes the relations of synchronization necessarily determining
audio, visual, or haptic meaning. In this sense, musical media offer
a rich yet specific account of media situations.
This panel seeks presentations exploring the design of musical media,
whether in the context of the "biomechanics" of early cinema, or the
"bioinformatics" of contemporary digital transmedia. Papers might
explore late 19th and early 20th century devices for the projection
of musical images, visual music animation, narrativized musical
presentation in commercial film or TV, artist video, musical video
games, or MP3 interfaces. How does the media object attempt "musical"
presentation of the visual screen or interface? The goal is to reveal
historical and contemporary problematics of transmedia exhibition and
situational use of synchronized media.
