Almost Perfect 2008: "Call and Response" Locative Media Residency

The Almost Perfect ‘Call and Response’ residency at the Banff New Media Institute is an annual, concentrated four-week experimental prototyping lab that explores the creation and context of location. Practitioners from all walks of locative and mobile media practice are encouraged to apply to the programme. We are particularly interested in practice that extends beyond the device out into the environment, be it landscape or datascape.

The massive scale of Banff National Parks Rocky Mountains and the expanse of the Great Plains to the east provide a unique opportunity to un-tether yourself from the usual coordinates of place. Geographies of time, scale and great disruption lay exposed, lending themselves to the call and response of technology and nature. This residency allows for the time and space to consider how modern pervasive technologies allow us to disconnect from our desktop cells and interact with the world in a whole new way.

Through a combination of dedicated studio time, group discourse, peer critique, design exercise and studio visits Almost Perfect ‘Call and Response’ looks to explore location-based artwork and the repercussions of producing work for place and in-particular in outdoor and non-urban contexts. The residency will be led by established locative media practitioners Plan B (Daniel Belasco Rogers and Sophia New), Christina Ray (Glowlab NYC) and Angus Leech. Almost Perfect ‘Call and Response’ will not only support the open conceptualisation of new works, but also re-visit influential pieces from this emerging medium's history.

Artists can apply for 2 different studio spaces at MoKS. These studios offer the same room sizes and conditions, but have different application procedures.

Residency Studio A

The Residency has operated since 2002. Artists are welcome from around the world. The studio is available to use free of charge from March 1st through November 30th. Residency periods can be arranged from 1 to 6 months. People working in all disciplines of art, e.g. visual, performing and media arts, music, criticism, research etc are encouraged to apply.

Application deadline for 2009 AIR period is September 15th 2008.

Artists are expected to find their own means for travel and per diem for living/insurance costs for the residency. MoKS can help with some materials and special tools on previous mutual agreement. MoKS occasionally gives out artist grants for residency period, but it depends on MoKS current year budget. Assistance with making contacts to Estonian galleries, curators and art schools is also possible. MoKS appreciates artworks donated by the resident artists for its collection.

Project Studio B

Studio (B) is open since summer 2008. This studio is rented out for shorter and mid-term residencies and/or artistic projects (1 week up to 3 months). Applications to studio (B) are on running basis.

Studio XX has redefined its Residency and Co-Production Program in keeping with the diversity of approaches that have been brought about by new and multiple methodologies and processes being practiced by artists working with new media and the Web as creative platforms. Residencies are offered each year through three major axes identified below. We've done it in order to offer an improved context within which Québecois and Canadian women artists may conceptualize and create, and to better accommodate the evolving realities of contemporary networked practices.

Residency Program

This year, the residences are theme-free. All themes are eligible for consideration. That said, we favour projects taking into account the Studio's orientation and commitment to open source software.

*NEW*

The Matricules Project Residency
This new category of residency is centered around the use of the Studio XX archives as source material for a proposal. Last year, Studio XX embarked on a major archival project called Matricules which will allow the Studio to post all of its archival material to date online. It is at once an image bank and a depository of all of the Studio's writings and documentary footage to date.

Despite the fact that online access to these archives will only be available as of April 1, this should not prevent you from conceptualizing a proposal. All of the original source material is also available at the Studio. The Matricules Project is comprised of more than 3400 images files, sounds, videos, written critical texts and press releases documenting all our artistic streams: The Femmes Br@nchées Salons, The Artist Residencies, Co-productions and Collaborations, Projects and Special Events, training workshops, the HTMlles Festival, XX Files radio interviews and .dpi articles. The Matricules Project data base allows the user to cross-reference individual artists, events and documents, switching from one event to another. Matricules' main interface offers an image table of contents by event type and by month, providing historical trajectory of the Studio's activities.

This innovative prototype was developed with assistance from Koumbit's Drupal Content Management System (CMS): an open source tool for web site creation. From the beginning, the Matricules project was conceived as an interactive archive allowing users to modify or correct the Studio's written history, where necessary. When the site is completed, it will ultimately be a very powerful archival, presentation and interpretation tool for Studio XX's members.

Virtual Residency
In response to a growing demand by women artists working outside of the Montreal region wishing to explore the different possibilities of on-line and/or networked collaborations, Studio XX is in the process of elaborating the mechanics of Virtual Residencies in order to facilitate the creation of works via other networks.

Open Residency
Open and self-directed, these residencies offer access to women artists wishing to deepen the experimentation phase of projects they are currently developing.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

Studio XX favours interdisciplinary approaches and welcomes projects created or directed by women artists or collectives working in collaboration with other professionals. This axis responds to the growing number of trans-disciplinary projects and their inherent technological challenges and complexities. Selected projects must be undertaken using Studio's available resources (equipment, technical knowledge, financial resources).

All submissions are reviewed by a Selection Committee. Selection of applicants is also based on at least two out of the three following criteria:

- Offering significant support and at an important point of the artist's development
- Resonant with Studio XX's priorities in terms of technical experimentation
- Relevant, captivating expression of theoretical, political and/or social engagement

Residencies are eight weeks in length. For accepted proposals, Studio XX offers:

_A $750 artist's fee
_45 hours of technical support ($1125 value)
_Access to the Studio's equipment ($3335 rental value)
_Possibility to participate in certain group workshops ($200-300 value)
_Distinct working space for the artist and her instructor

Studio XX will disseminate the artist's project on its web site, with an artist's presentation to be given within its Femmes br@nchées Salon Series in the year following completion of the project. For participants working from afar, the presentation will take place on-line via streaming or chat. Residencies do not include travel costs and per diem, and the artist is responsible for her living arrangements while in Montreal.

Co-Production Program

All year long, Studio XX accepts co-production proposals from artists as well as from collectives and artist-organizations. Emerging and experienced artists working with new technologies and curators are invited to submit project ideas including technical specifications.

The Studio provides a Linux lab and Macs, video an digital audio resources. Projects are selected based on quality, the availability of the lab and technical requirements. Co-productions carried out at Studio XX demand full autonomy from the artists on both a conceptual and technical level. These residencies require autonomy on the conceptual and technical level but if necessary, the Studio can provide personalized technical support at the hourly rate of $25. The projects can stretch over a three-month period.

During the residency, the artists will have access to Studio XX's computer, video and digital audio equipment. They will also have access to available space on one of the large bandwidth servers - ideal for network experiments and webcasting - and to a dispatcher for wireless Internet connections. It will be necessary to provide a fixed schedule and to book time in the lab.

It is possible for the Studio to cover certain expenses for co-productions, such as training fees. The productions and co-productions are not housed on our web site but we do direct the artists towards servers that can accommodate their work. Studio XX actively seeks to program artworks produced within the co-productions at events as the Femmes br@nchées Salon series.

Making Exhibition Proposals:

The Blue Oyster makes one main call for proposals annually. The deadline for exhibitions occurring in 2008 has already past. There will be another call made in the first half of 2008 for 2009 exhibitions.

There will be other calls for proposals from time to time for specific projects during 2008 and proposals are welcome at any time but may not be considered immediately.
The proposals received will be discussed by a panel, generally made up of the current board members and the gallery manager, for inclusion in the programme.

The Blue Oyster prioritises projects that are speculative experimental and innovative in their genre. Age, sex and ethnicity are not used as criteria and will not influence the selection decisions. Non inclusion in the programme is not a reflection on the quality of the individual artist, high quality projects may still be declined for various programming reasons.

What should I include in my proposal?

You should apply in your own words but below are some suggestions for length and content.

1. Outline of the projects conceptual/ artistic/ political/ philosophical explorations. 200-400 words, maximum 1 page (A4)

2. Outline of the specifics of the proposed project and how you intend to address the space. As there is more than one space available, please indicate how much and what kind of space your project needs. Also indicate any special requirements, equipment or technical support. It may help to address the gallery flooplan.
1-2 pages (more if needed)

3. Examples of previous work that are strongly relevant to your proposed project. Where possible choose images that will give the panel a realistic sense of what your planned exhibition is likely to involve. Label the works with size medium and date, also make sure you label works in progress and studio shots.
3-4 images (no more than 10).

4. A concise C.V. that explains your professional background and experience.

5. Any other material that may help the panel assess your project, for example catalogues from previous work, letters of support, reviews.

Note: Please do not assume we are familiar with your work when submitting proposals. As the trust does change membership from time to time, some trust members may not be familiar with your work, even if you have previously shown with us.


Money/ Financial conditions:

The Gallery is supported entirely by grants. Our major contributor is Creative New Zealand supplemented where possible by smaller grants from various other sources (including Dunedin City Council and Community Trust of Otago)
Because our income is not stable the exact proportion of what we are able to provide is set every six months. Should your project be accepted, financial conditions will be notified in writing well before the commencement of setup.

We take no commissions on sales and will not prevent work being offered for sale but selling work, or to be more specific work that is focused on being saleable is not what the gallery is for, projects with strong commercial intent will generally not be accepted.

Available equipment:

The gallery owns two data projectors and DVD players, which need to be booked well in advance. We will help source equipment for projects as much as we can, however final responsibility for installing the project remains the artists.

Since 1979 the Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede has been seeking to promote young artists who explore innovative positions in the field of contemporary art. Today artists, whose work addresses complex aesthetic, cultural or political issues, rarely find the necessary support to realize their ambitious projects. This is why the Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede wishes to offer these artists the opportunity to develop their work in the course of a residential scholarship of three or six months.

The Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede offers ideal working conditions. The historic remise of the castle of Bleckede has been restored and transformed into three studios, each of which provides an extensive work space and a comfortable living area. The castle is located in the nature reserve Elbufer Drawehn close to the river Elbe. The placid environment guarantees an atmosphere of undisturbed concentration. The scholarship includes a monthly grant of Euro 1.400,- , which is made available for up to three scholarship holders at any one time, by the state of Lower Saxony.

The city of Lüneburg is not far away. Here the innovative programme of exhibitions and events staged by the Kunstraum of the University of Lüneburg and the Halle für Kunst Lüneburg e.V. allows the participation in the contemporary art world. If required, the facilities of the cultural studies-course at the University of Lüneburg might be used.

Moreover Hamburg and Berlin is within easy reach, both of which have a thriving cultural life. The residential scholarship of the Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede is associated with the international exchange program Pépinières Européenes pour Jeunes Artistes.

The strictly spaces of time could only be modified (for example April till September or October till December), if an other artists will agree with a change.

The artistic council and the representatives of the borough of Lüneburg plan to finalise the awarding of residencies for the period of 2008 in October 2007.

Eyebeam is now accepting applications for Winter 2008 residencies. In addition to our preexistent residency program, this season we're very pleased to announce an additional opportunity for artist support: the inaugural Commission for Resident Artists, underwritten by Dewar's. Details about the commission, which will offer an additional subsidy to two residents a season, are detailed in a separate section below.

The application deadline for the Winter 2008 residency season (which will run from January-June) has been extended to October 1, 2007. All applicants will be informed of their status by November 2007.

Eyebeam residencies support the creative research, production and presentation of initiatives that query art, technology and culture. The residency is a period of concentration and immersion in artistic investigation, daring research or experimental production of visionary expression, applications and projects. Past initiatives have ranged from moving image, sound and physical computing works to technical prototypes, installations and public interventions.

The ideal resident will both contribute to and benefit from the collective environment at Eyebeam, and will embrace the spirit of openness shared across the organization: open source, open content and open distribution.

Residents are encouraged to participate in public events including workshops, demonstrations of research in progress, panel discussions, and on-line releases, in addition to regularly scheduled open studio events. Therefore, we do ask that artists include in their proposal examples of how they might like to contribute to Eyebeam's public programming.

The program term is from January to June with the potential for extension and/or re-application. Residents will be selected from an open call, based on the quality of the work or research being proposed, the availability of the necessary tools and skills to support the work, and in consideration of the overarching research themes and activities of the organization.

Eyebeam's research themes bring together creative practitioners and expert external participants to develop new research leading to possible public outcomes including seminars, public discussion and exhibition.
Research themes for 2008 include (though will not be limited to):

* Energy, Technology and Sustainability
* Urban research, urban interventions and media in public space

Artists and creative technologists interested in these research areas are particularly encouraged to apply for residencies.


Eyebeam Residency
Residencies include:

* $5,000 honorarium
* 24/7 access to Eyebeam's Chelsea facility in New York City, including equipment and technical expertise from Eyebeam staff and Fellows
* The potential for collaborative exchange with other residents and Eyebeam fellows, as well as support from interns

Residents are encouraged to work onsite at Eyebeam for as much of their residency as possible, in order to both contribute to and gain from the collective, collaborative context of the labs.

International applicants are welcome to apply, though Eyebeam will not cover additional travel or accommodation expenses. We are, however, happy to work with selected applicants, to help them to secure funds to cover these expenses. International residents are responsible for securing their own visas for the residency period. International applicants are encouraged to apply now for Summer 2008 residencies.

Up to three residencies will be offered in Winter 2008.


Commission for Resident Artists

Eyebeam is pleased to announce the inaugural Commission for Resident Artists, which is being underwritten by Dewar's.
The Commission for Resident Artists includes:

* $10,000 honorarium
* Additional stipend for travel, accommodation, and equipment expenses
* 24/7 access to Eyebeam's Chelsea facility in New York City, including equipment and technical expertise from Eyebeam staff and fellows

Call: Expressions of Interest from Visual Artists

Call for Expressions of Interest from Visual Artists

The Saskatchewan Arts Board and Canadian Western Agribition are looking for visual artists who are interested in working on an education project on the Agribition grounds in Regina during the week of November 19 to 23, 2007.

The project will be similar to a school residency. The contracted artist(s) will work with Grade 4 to 8 students to create a sculpture or mural on-site using recyclable materials. The artist(s) will design a project suitable for student participation and Agribition will provide the required materials.

Artists should be able to appreciate a high-energy environment, as students will be coming and going from the site during the project hours of 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. daily. The project details are not yet finalized, but interested artists should contact Dianne Warren by October 19 to express their interest.

The Arts Board has an ongoing partnership with Agribition and is pleased to assist them in developing this project.

DISONANCIAS is pleased to announce the call for proposals from
international artists to work on joint research projects with heads
of R&D&I in companies and research centres located in the Basque
Country (Spain).

DISONANCIAS is a platform that promotes relationships between artists
and companies, research centres or public organisations in order to
foster innovation in all its aspects and transmit to society the
importance of developing creative environments.

Artists are requested to develop a prototype, procedure or idea based
on a framework predefined by one of the nine participating entities:
DORLET, EiTB, FUNDACIÓN IKERTIA, GRUPO SARKIS/LAGUNKETA, IMAR, LANIK,
LANTEGI BATUAK, POLO GARAIA and TECNALIA. The concepts they want to
investigate can be grouped in two main fields:

- concepts dealing with the organisation of territory and ways of
interrelating people and resources: sustainable urban environment
models (TECNALIA), ways of relating between disabled people
integrated into the job market and their social network (LANTEGI
BATUAK) or the interrelationship dynamics between the members of an
technological park (POLO GARAIA);

- technological or material application/developments: most of the
researches in this section deal with architecture and urban issues:
domotics (DORLET), interactive urban furniture (IMAR), environmental
architecture (GRUPO SARKIS / LAGUNKETA), transformable architecture
(LANIK), or health emergency in public spaces (FUNDACIÓN IKERTIA).

In the special case of EiTB (Basque Radio and Television), the artist
(s) is requested to research into the documentary format based on the
creation of an audiovisual work dealing with all the collaboration
projects.

The submitted proposals will be examined by an international jury
comprising Cecilia Andersson, Bronac Ferran, Jose Pérez de Lama and
Juan Mari Uzkudun. The final decision will be taken by the hosting
entities and will be communicated at the end of October 2007.

DISONANCIAS gives priority to the involvement of artists:
- interested in working around the interaction between different
social and cultural systems and projects that favour group work;
- who use science or technology as a basis for their work, or who
reflect upon it.

The call is open to artists working with any type of medium and in
any discipline, either individually or as a group. There is no limit
on age, nationality or place of residence.

The selected artists or group of artists will each receive the amount
of 8,000 net euros as a fee for the work carried out and for their
travel and accommodation costs. The costs that may be generated in
the development of the research work and associated with external
companies and suppliers should not exceed 5,000 euros + VAT, and they
should be previously approved by the hosting entity.

experimental projects, process pieces and unusual initiatives in media
art practice today.

The Media Arts program seeks to present a range of artists: artists
of all levels of experience are strongly encouraged to apply, as are
artists from diverse sexual orientations and cultural backgrounds.
Applications from artists from other disciplines who wish to expand
their creative practices into media arts are welcomed.

Projects are made possible through access to production facilities
and technical support from an expert team of qualified staff and
volunteers. Financial support is available in the form of travel
expenses and artist fees. Residency length varies according to
personal needs and can range in duration from one week to six weeks.

Artists wishing to be considered for the 2008/2009 programming year
are invited to submit proposals to Western Front's Media Arts
Residency Program on or before September 5th, 2007.
