Call: Interaccess seeks Recent Grads for a Group Show

Bend Over and Submit to InterAccess!
An Open Call for Recent Graduates!
Deadline: Friday April 25th, 2008.

Let us tie you up in an exhibition this summer. Submissions are now being accepted for the 8th annual Emerging Artists Exhibition. Since 2001, InterAccess has mounted an annual Emerging Artists Exhibition showcasing new media works by post-secondary students and/or recent graduates.

This initiative aims to provide students and recent graduates with professional experience and exposure.

We are looking for submissions of electronic, interactive and new media work, including works related to artistic genres such as sculpture, installation, video and performance. Preference may be given to submissions exploring the relationship and/or interaction between human intimacy and technology, although due to the fluidity of an open call the theme is responsive and the curator develops an exhibition related to the submissions received.

Call: Eyebeam Residency in New York

Eyebeam Residency New York

Mon Oct 1, 2007
(Eastern Time - Montreal)
http://eyebeam.org/production/production.php?page=aircall (map)
Calendar: Audio Calls

Eyebeam is now accepting applications for Winter 2008 residencies. In addition to our preexistent residency program, this season we're very pleased to announce an additional opportunity for artist support: the inaugural Commission for Resident Artists, underwritten by Dewar's. Details about the commission, which will offer an additional subsidy to two residents a season, are detailed in a separate section below.

The application deadline for the Winter 2008 residency season (which will run from January-June) has been extended to October 1, 2007. All applicants will be informed of their status by November 2007.

Eyebeam residencies support the creative research, production and presentation of initiatives that query art, technology and culture. The residency is a period of concentration and immersion in artistic investigation, daring research or experimental production of visionary expression, applications and projects. Past initiatives have ranged from moving image, sound and physical computing works to technical prototypes, installations and public interventions.

The ideal resident will both contribute to and benefit from the collective environment at Eyebeam, and will embrace the spirit of openness shared across the organization: open source, open content and open distribution.

Residents are encouraged to participate in public events including workshops, demonstrations of research in progress, panel discussions, and on-line releases, in addition to regularly scheduled open studio events. Therefore, we do ask that artists include in their proposal examples of how they might like to contribute to Eyebeam's public programming.

The program term is from January to June with the potential for extension and/or re-application. Residents will be selected from an open call, based on the quality of the work or research being proposed, the availability of the necessary tools and skills to support the work, and in consideration of the overarching research themes and activities of the organization.

Eyebeam's research themes bring together creative practitioners and expert external participants to develop new research leading to possible public outcomes including seminars, public discussion and exhibition.
Research themes for 2008 include (though will not be limited to):

* Energy, Technology and Sustainability
* Urban research, urban interventions and media in public space

Artists and creative technologists interested in these research areas are particularly encouraged to apply for residencies.

Eyebeam Residency
Residencies include:

* $5,000 honorarium
* 24/7 access to Eyebeam's Chelsea facility in New York City, including equipment and technical expertise from Eyebeam staff and Fellows
* The potential for collaborative exchange with other residents and Eyebeam fellows, as well as support from interns

Residents are encouraged to work onsite at Eyebeam for as much of their residency as possible, in order to both contribute to and gain from the collective, collaborative context of the labs.

International applicants are welcome to apply, though Eyebeam will not cover additional travel or accommodation expenses. We are, however, happy to work with selected applicants, to help them to secure funds to cover these expenses. International residents are responsible for securing their own visas for the residency period. International applicants are encouraged to apply now for Summer 2008 residencies.

Up to three residencies will be offered in Winter 2008.

Commission for Resident Artists

Eyebeam is pleased to announce the inaugural Commission for Resident Artists, which is being underwritten by Dewar's.
The Commission for Resident Artists includes:

* $10,000 honorarium
* Additional stipend for travel, accommodation, and equipment expenses
* 24/7 access to Eyebeam's Chelsea facility in New York City, including equipment and technical expertise from Eyebeam staff and fellows
* The potential for collaborative exchange with other residents as well as support from interns

In exchange, the commissioned resident artists are asked to:

* Commit to presentation of the process of creating the commission through a website and regular blog posts
* Commit to presentation of the finished commissioned work at the end of the residency

Two commissions will be awarded in Winter 2008: one to a foreign artist and one to an American artist. We are particularly interested in commissions which focus on open source outcomes.
In order to be considered for this opportunity, you must:

* Be at least 25 years old
* State your interest in being considered for the commission in the standard online residency application

Additionally, you must send a letter of nomination from a mentor, employer, collaborator or curator to residencyinfo AT eyebeam DOT org by the October 1, 2007, 2007 application deadline.

Call: The Synthetic Aesthetics of New Media Art Conference seeks presenters

Call For Papers:

THE SYNTHETIC AESTHETICS OF NEW MEDIA ART
Presented by The New Media Caucus in Association with the College Art
Association
February 20-23, 2008; Dallas, TX http://conference.collegeart.org/2008/

Panel Chair: Carolyn Kane, PhD Candidate Media, Culture, and
Communication, New York University clk267@nyu.edu

Contrary to traditional aesthetic theories that argue for the primacy of
either the subjective and phenomenological, or formal and objective
interpretations of artwork, the aesthetics of electronic media, like the
logic of technical media itself, is thoroughly removed from
anthropomorphic sensibility. One could say that electronic media
aesthetics are marked by technical trauma.

However, much contemporary new media art criticism exemplifies a
hermeneutic approach that seeks to rationalize and transform work into
intelligible *art objects* for canonization and social theories. Is this
approach problematic for the logic of technical media? Can certain
attributes such as color, form, affect, or sound, effectively reconcile
computer based artwork with the subjective and humanistic drives in art
making?

The panel invites papers that address the aesthetics of New Media art in
distinction to previous aesthetic models or media platforms. For instance,
papers suggesting the ways in which color, sound, line, form, symbolism,
affect, anti-aesthetics or ideology may be distinct to new media
aesthetics are all welcomed. Essentially the panel inquires: what do
theoreticians and practitioners address in New Media art, and why? Which
artists and / or commercial work do you think best exemplifies these
issues? Special attention will be given to those abstracts that are
concerned with the use of color in New Media work.

Presenters can propose brief lectures; media or artist presentations of
their own, or other artist's work; discussions; or other acceptable
suggestions.

Timeline:
Due by October 1, 2007:
*Abstracts (max 500 words)
* Paper / Presentation Titles
*Confirmation that presenters will be able to travel to Dallas on February
20-23, 2008
* Current CV and a brief bio.
*Specification of presentation format

GOALS

Human computer interaction (HCI) is one of the foremost
challenges of our society. New paradigms for interacting
with computers are being developed which will define the
21st century and enable the world to communicate and interact
effortlessly and intuitively.

In order for HCI systems to interact seamlessly with people,
they will need to understand their environment through vision
and auditory input. Moreover, HCI systems should learn how
to adaptively and intelligently respond depending on the context.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers
whose work is related to human computer interaction.
We are soliciting original contributions which address
a wide range of theoretical and application issues in
human computer interaction including, but not limited to:

* New paradigms in HCI
* Affective detection and recognition
* Smart interfaces
* Human motion tracking
* Gesture recognition
* Multimedia data modeling and visualization
* Multimodal event detection and recognition
* Human motion and gesture recognition
* HCI issues in image/video retrieval
* Learning in HCI
* Input and interaction techniques
* Perceptual user interfaces
* Wearable and pervasive technologies in HCI
* Intelligent Virtual Environments

Authors should preferably use the paper submission web system to
submit full papers at

http://press.liacs.nl/hci2007/submit.html

(no longer than 10 pages in the Springer LNCS style in English).

All papers will be peer-reviewed. In the tradition of the

Call: Biore offeres $20 000 to emerging female artist

From Blog "Art Fag City"

http://www.artfagcity.com/2007/03/30/biore-announces-20000-grant-to-go-to-top-female-emerging-artist/

"I suppose you’ll just have to get past the fact that Biore titles
their new grant program for women artists the “Uncover Discover
Program“, as they’re offering $20,000 and a trip to New York to the
winners in each category film, fashion, music, and art. According to
the entrance requirements, artists can not be represented by a major
gallery in a top five U.S. market, (so for example, those who show in
New York, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco and LA at a major gallery do
not qualify,) and must make wall mountable work in the mediums of
photography, painting or mixed-media. This unfortunately eliminates
sculptors and most new media artists, a common problem for those
working in the field. For the rest of you wishing to apply, I
encourage it, but note two potential caveats. One, I spoke to their
publicist and asked them who was on their review panel, and was told
it wouldn’t be confirmed until after the submissions had been
received. This doesn’t make much sense to me since most artists want
to know who will be looking at their work prior to applying. It
indicates the level of seriousness of the competition, and helps
applicants put together submissions. Two, upon entering, artists must
agree to give Biore the right to cut, edit, and reformat their work.
I suspect this clause was meant to be applied to those entering the
film category, but I can’t help but be wary of anyone who wants to
edit a painting for the purposes of presentation.

With that said, the competition looks like a great opportunity for
emerging female artists. $20,000 can really make a lot of difference,
particularly early on in a career, so my advice is to apply."
