Call: The Synthetic Aesthetics of New Media Art Conference seeks presenters

Subject: Reminder CFP: The Synthetic Aesthetics of New Media Art
Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2007 06:38:03 -0500
From: Carolyn L Kane
Reply-To: Carolyn L Kane
To: PHILOS-L@liverpool.ac.uk

Call For Papers:

THE SYNTHETIC AESTHETICS OF NEW MEDIA ART
Presented by The New Media Caucus in Association with the College Art
Association
February 20-23, 2008; Dallas, TX http://conference.collegeart.org/2008/

Panel Chair: Carolyn Kane, PhD Candidate Media, Culture, and
Communication, New York University clk267@nyu.edu

Contrary to traditional aesthetic theories that argue for the primacy of
either the subjective and phenomenological, or formal and objective
interpretations of artwork, the aesthetics of electronic media, like the
logic of technical media itself, is thoroughly removed from
anthropomorphic sensibility. One could say that electronic media
aesthetics are marked by technical trauma.

However, much contemporary new media art criticism exemplifies a
hermeneutic approach that seeks to rationalize and transform work into
intelligible *art objects* for canonization and social theories. Is this
approach problematic for the logic of technical media? Can certain
attributes such as color, form, affect, or sound, effectively reconcile
computer based artwork with the subjective and humanistic drives in art
making?

The panel invites papers that address the aesthetics of New Media art in
distinction to previous aesthetic models or media platforms. For instance,
papers suggesting the ways in which color, sound, line, form, symbolism,
affect, anti-aesthetics or ideology may be distinct to new media
aesthetics are all welcomed. Essentially the panel inquires: what do
theoreticians and practitioners address in New Media art, and why? Which
artists and / or commercial work do you think best exemplifies these
issues? Special attention will be given to those abstracts that are
concerned with the use of color in New Media work.

Presenters can propose brief lectures; media or artist presentations of
their own, or other artist's work; discussions; or other acceptable
suggestions.

Timeline:
Due by October 1, 2007:
*Abstracts (max 500 words)
* Paper / Presentation Titles
*Confirmation that presenters will be able to travel to Dallas on February
20-23, 2008
* Current CV and a brief bio.
*Specification of presentation format

Send proposals and / or any question to Carolyn Kane clk267@nyu.edu

Call: Society for Cinema and Media Studies seeks papers on the subject of "design and media"

I'm filling out a panel proposal on "designing musical media," which
I'm hoping will be a productive opportunity to revisit notions of
musicality in the context of media transitions, the analytics of
corporeality, sense, or sensation, and contemporary problems in
biopolitical analysis. I'll leave a proper bibliographic treatment
aside, in the interest of soliciting a wide variety of treatments of
"musicality" on (or as) the audiovisual screen or interface.

The usual "motley cr?e" -- so to write -- of critical approaches are
welcome: historical-empirical; critico-theoretical; cultural; ethico-
aesthetic; political-philosophical; popular cultural; popular music
cultures; gender, sexuality; race, ethnicity; class; globalization;
deconstructive; post-Deleuzian; "new (old) media" or media
transitions; historical-speculative; and also, significantly in this
case, design critique; etc.

The common denominator will be that proposals are centered around the
problematic of musicality, media reception, and "the screen" broadly
understood. And I'm hoping for challenging approaches rather than
conventional ones.

My apologies for cross-posting; and feel free to pass on.

I'd need abstracts/proposals (250 - 1000 words, short bibliography)
by August 10. Note that you'd have to be a member of SCMS by January
2008 in order to participate.

And my email reply info is below.

Warm regards,

James Tobias, Ph.D.

Subject: SCMS Bulletin Board Post

Type of Posting: Panel

Proposed Panel/Workshop Subject: Designing Musical Media: From
Biomechanical to Bioinformatic Screens

Organizer Name(s):

James Tobias

E-Mail Address: james.tobias@ucr.edu

Summary: What does it mean to put music on the screen?
From early cinema to contemporary digital media, we observe repeated
efforts at designing the projected image as a musical display. As
varied as they have been challenging, these efforts propose the
musical screen as a device for regulating viewer mood, as visual
music animation, as avant-garde experiment or conceptual
intervention, as commercial spectacle, as critical engagement, as
"immersion," as parody, as television theme-song, as advertisement,
as promotional music clip (in film or video), as musical game, as
playback device, or aesthetic-scientific prototype.
While given short shrift in critiques of narrative or of the avant-
garde, considered as symptomatic of spectacular culture in commercial
production, or written off as unnecessarily duplicating the
soundtrack or attempting to impose attributes of the auditory on the
visual, the design of musical media taken as a problematic rather
than as a margin of artistic or commercial production actually
exhibit three crucial characteristics which allow a re-configuration
of screen studies within contemporary transmedia logics. First,
divorcing the "musical" from the "auditory," musical media designs
question the relationships of perception or cultural context to
technological exhibition; these attempts are often affective and
ethical, as much as technological, interventions in media practices.
Second, designs for musical media point to the complexity of any
"single" medium, so even a "visual" medium becomes multi- or
transmedial, with broad implications for contemporary "convergent"
digital media. Third, across media, musical design as problematic
emphasizes the relations of synchronization necessarily determining
audio, visual, or haptic meaning. In this sense, musical media offer
a rich yet specific account of media situations.
This panel seeks presentations exploring the design of musical media,
whether in the context of the "biomechanics" of early cinema, or the
"bioinformatics" of contemporary digital transmedia. Papers might
explore late 19th and early 20th century devices for the projection
of musical images, visual music animation, narrativized musical
presentation in commercial film or TV, artist video, musical video
games, or MP3 interfaces. How does the media object attempt "musical"
presentation of the visual screen or interface? The goal is to reveal
historical and contemporary problematics of transmedia exhibition and
situational use of synchronized media.

Call: University of Regina's soundscape conference seeks participants

We are pleased to announce a SSHRC-funded Summer Institute and Conference, to be held from June 9-22, 2007 at the University of Regina. Hosted by Dr. Pauline Minevich (Department of Music) and Prof. Charles Fox (Department of Media Production & Studies), these creative and theoretical forums will provide a unique opportunity for students, artists, musicians, composers, and researchers to participate in an intensive programme devoted to soundscape art forms.

The formal and informal venues of ais2 will take place in an atmosphere of collegiality and discourse between artists and academics. Theorists will directly experience creative practices and artists will have an opportunity to display and validate their current developments amongst peers.

The Creative Forum

Building on the success of the Summer Institute held at the University of Regina in July 2004, The Art of Immersive Soundscapes 2 will attract Canada's leading artists and academics to contemplate, compose and create immersive soundscapes. The opportunity for presentation of complex three dimensional soundscapes will be given the best of possible venues, through high quality presentation facilities, engaged inquiry and enthusiastic, receptive audiences: artwork that is on the leading edge of technology and artistic expression.

The Creative Forum's program is diverse, including:

Master Classes For the advanced student or practitioner: be exposed to new methods and theories.
Audio Basics For those new to audio art: become grounded in audio and composition practices through classes presented by leading artists.
Collaborative exploration State-of-the art multichannel audio studio facilities will enable a creative setting for the creation and presentation of new, challenging methods, ideas and artworks.
Presentations Nightly artist talks and presentations of audio compositions, plus an off-site visit to a special prairie setting.

The nine Artists-in-Residence for ais2 are among Canada's most innovative composers, acoustic designers and audio artists:

Darren Copeland (Toronto): Independent audio artist and Director of New Adventures in Sound Art, Toronto.
Dr. Christos Hatzis (University of Toronto): Distinguished multi-award-winning composer, whose music utilizes multimedia and sound art.
Stephen Heimbecker (Montreal): independent audio artist, with exhibited installations in Europe and North America.
Wade McGregor (North Vancouver): Senior consultant, MC Squared Systems Design Group, specializing in acoustic design; has published over 250 technical papers, awarded patent for design of modular microphone (with Charles Fox).
Ellen Moffat (Saskatoon): Independent audio artist, with sound installation presentations across Canada.
Gordon Monahan (Berlin): Independent audio artist, with exhibitions and performances across Europe and North America.
Barry Truax (Simon Fraser University): Internationally celebrated pioneer and teacher in audio art, technology, and electroacoustic composition.
Dr. Ellen Waterman (University of Guelph): Creative sound artist, music performer and improviser.
Hildegard Westerkamp (Vancouver), Independent audio artist, former faculty member at Simon Fraser University, with exhibitions world-wide.
