Call: Rhizome.org is awarding commissions to new media artists

In 2009, Rhizome will award seven commissions with fees ranging from $3000-$5000.

This year, Rhizome has expanded our scope, formerly focused strictly on Internet-based art to encompass the broad range of practices that fall under new media art.

This includes projects that creatively engage new and networked technologies to works that reflect on the impact of these tools and media in a variety of forms. With this expanded format, commissioned works can take the final form of online works, performance, video, installation or sound art. Projects can be made for the context of the gallery, the public, the web or networked devices.

This year, all applicants will be reviewed by a selected jury and several awards will be granted through Rhizome's membership in an open, community vote.

Proposal submission takes place online. The deadline is midnight on Monday, March 31, 2008.

Call: Murcia Festival seeks artists to collaborate on the theme of sustainability

Dept. of Culture Region Murcia
FESTIVAL SOS 4.8 MURCIA

CALL FOR ARTISTS
http://www.sos48.com/en/index.php?seccion=1

Murcia launches the Event SOS 4.8: 48 hours of non-stop artistic creation related to the concept of sustainability

The City of Murcia has been very active these past years in the field of contemporary culture. One of the outstanding institutions is the CENDEAC (Centre for Documentation and Advanced Studies of Contemporary Art) which has organized conferences, panels, and symposiums with key thinkers such as Antonio Neri, Slavoj Zizek, Zygmunt Bauman, Nicolas Bourriaud, and James Clifford.

Pedro Alberto Cruz, former director of CENDEAC and actual Counsellor of Culture of Region Murcia, explains that Murcia has always had a great interest in promoting the study and production of contemporary art practices. And in this sense –he proceeds- the Festival SOS 4.8 aims to be an original proposal to contemporary cultural practices reflecting around the concept of sustainability and allowing a fruitful dialogue among disciplines like visual arts, Visual Jockeying (VJ), net art, performance, music, and theory.

INCLUSIVE SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability basically means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In words of the artistic director, Paco Barragán, SOS 4.8 understands sustainability not only in exclusively ecological terms –an issue that has become very urgent but at the same time very trendy these days-, but also as a concept that allows us to reflect and re-frame visual culture, democracy, information society, techno-sustainability, consumer society –CULTURE- as well as tourism, immigration, nature, and urbanism –ENVIRONMENT.

48 HOURS FORMAT
New times impose new challenges, and as a result suggest new formats. Thus SOS 4.8 has been conceived as an intense laboratory where during 48 hours artistic creation and exhibition will go hand in hand blurring the strict lines between artist and audience. Thus, all the selected works will be produced in situ in 24 hours and exhibited the next 24 hours. The artist will have the exhibition site or the city of Murcia as stage to carry out his or her proposal.

FROM INTERPASSIVITY TO INTERACTIVITY
From the traditional artistic institutions interpassivity (Robert Pfaller), wherein communication is only one-way, hierarchical, and imposed on the visitor, SOS 4.8 proposes a more democratic and exciting concept of interactivity by allowing the public to assist and be part of the artistic process. Culture, art and artistic practices are not any longer medium-based but idea-based. So visual artists, not only stick to their medium but engage with Visual Jockeying (VJ) and Digital Film -Micha Klein-, or play in a gothic rock band -Marc Bijl-, thus creating challenging exchanges between contemporary culture and arts.

CURATORIAL TEAM
SOS 4.8 has selected a diverse and distinguished international curatorial team:
-Christiane Paul, Adj. Curator New Media Whitney Museum (USA)
-Rirkrit Tiravanija, artist and curator, (Argentina/Thailand)
-Paco Barragán, independent curator and artistic director SOS 4.8 (Spain)

OPEN CALL AND SECTIONS
SOS 4.8 is a mix of invitational and open call. All artists are invited to take part in the open call, regardless of their nationality, residence or age. A total of 6 artists will be selected by the curators from the proposals sent via the open call to our website http://www.sos48.com for the following sections:
I) Visual Arts
II) Net Art or Visual Jockeying (VJ)
III) Performance

The 6 artists from the open call will be invited, together with 6 artists selected directly by the curators, and 3 artists from Murcia selected by the Artistic Director, to come to Murcia to carry out the selected proposal on the 2nd and 3rd of May 2008.

ARTIST PER DIEM AND PRODUCTION BUDGET
The selected artists will receive the following:
I) (Total) Artist fee of 2..500 Euros
II) Production/Equipment materials up to 2..000 Euros
III) Flight and Hotel up to 2.500 Euros

Call: Guelph booking opportunities for VJs

Hello strangers, my name is Ricky, I deejay under the name Ricky Bionix
and host a residency in Guelph every Thursday night which I have just
recently moved from the Albion Hotel to a new venue called the
Salsateria. Amongst other changes that go hand in hand with the move is
that I would like to place greater emphasis on artist involvement and
visual atmosphere. I've had a local video artist, Scott McGovern of Ed
Video mixing video live at the event before and will have a Toronto
artist visiting on the 8th to project his time lapse photography (he
will also be playing a dj set earlier in the night). This idea is still
defining itself and so I am open to suggestions and various ways of
going about things.

This post is a call out to visual artists, mostly in the realm of
projection, although I am open to other ideas. I would like to book
artists to show their stuff at this weekly event. Pay will not be
phenomenal (yeah, it's tough for everyone), but we'll get you here and
back and you'll have an opportunity to share your work.

If interested, please email me at daydream.nation.music
[at]gmail[dot]com letting me know who you are, what you do (links are
great), and what sort of compensation you would expect.

Hope to hear from you soon. Feel free to pass this along to friends who
might be interested.

---------- Forwarded message ----------

New Adventures in Sound Art
2007 Call for Submissions on the theme
"A Sonic Portrait"
Categories: Radio Art, Electroacoustic Music, Videomusic and
Installation Art
Deadline: September 30, 2007
New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) invites artists of all ages and
nationalities to submit works on the theme _A Sonic Portrait_ for
consideration in 2008 programming for the annual Deep Wireless, Sound
Travels, and SOUNDplay festivals, produced by New Adventures in Sound
Art in Toronto, Canada. Artists may submit works in one or all of the
following four categories: 1) Radio Art, 2) Electroacoustic Music, 3)
Videomusic and 4) Installation Art (Note: please send separate
submission forms for each entry).

Individual interpretations or variations on the theme are encouraged:
_A Sonic Portrait_ could be a portrait of a person, place or thing
done entirely in sound, an audio journal, a soundscape portrait,
sound mapping, a visualization of a sound and so on.

All submitted works must respond in some way to the theme _A Sonic
Portrait_ in order to be considered for 2008 NAISA programming.

1) Radio Art (for Deep Wireless)

The Radio Art category is for works conceived for radio or that use
radio and other wireless technology in their creation or that plays
with the idea of radio or wireless technology. Works submitted to
this category must be less than 60 minutes in duration. Special
consideration will be given to 1 minute radio art pieces for
broadcast as well as 1 page proposals for collaboration on translocal
broadcast performances.

Pieces will be selected for broadcast within Canada and on several
international radio stations in May 2008 as part of the Deep Wireless
festival of radio and transmission art.

Both Canadian and International radio art submissions will be
considered for inclusion in the following:

-The Deep Wireless 4 radio art compilation CD
-The radio art interventions (1 minute pieces played guerilla-style
on radio stations during the Deep Wireless festival)
-The Radio Art Salon - a listening gallery of radio art works
exhibited for the month of May.

A small number of Canadian artists will be chosen from the
submissions to be part of the Deep Wireless/CBC's Outfront
Commissioning Programme in 2008 with residencies at Charles Street
Video in Toronto.

2) Electroacoustic Music (for Sound Travels)

The Electroacoustic Music category is for multi-channel and stereo
works less than 20 minutes in duration and conceived for concert
performance or presentation in the Sound Travels festival of sound
art on Toronto Island. Preferred formats for performance presentation
include 5.1, octaphonic and 12 channel formats in both acousmatic
(tape), live and mixed formats. Please indicate in the notes the
intended format of presentation and any required instrumentation or
specialized equipment.

3) Videomusic (for SOUNDplay)

The Videomusic category is for works that explore non-narrative
abstraction with equal emphasis on sound and image. Submitted works
will be considered for video screenings with either stereo or multi-
channel playback. Submitted works will also be considered for
screenings in either a performance venue or a small-size gallery
alongside other works selected from this call for submissions.

4) Installation Art (for Deep Wireless, Sound Travels or SOUNDplay)

Installation proposals of previously realized works for site-specific
and gallery installations with no fixed duration will be considered
for presentation as part of Deep Wireless, Sound Travels or
SOUNDplay. Site-specific works can be for indoor or outdoor
locations. Works can use multichannel or single channel playback and
may incorporate any number of media, but must feature original sound
as a primary element. Please attach a list of the necessary equipment
required to mount the installation and which of these items can be
supplied by the artist. Submissions should include audio, video or
audio-video documentation of previously realized versions of the work.

Submission Guidelines

Please submit a completed application form (in digital format if
possible) along with the proposed works on CD or DVD. To download
the submission form please go to opportunities.html#calls>

More about the instructors, VJs Leeane Berger and Carrie Gates:

Carrie Gates – VJ Instructor
Carrie Gates' diverse art practices span the realms of VJing, experimental turntablism, sound art, sculpture, performance art, digital media, and the catylization of provocative interactive situations. Her work is unified by a pluralist vision and an appetite for teasing the uncanny from the familiar, critically yet playfully using and abusing any media she encounters. Recently, Gates has been working with creating innovative VJ performances using Max/MSP/Jitter and Arkaos software, sharing her findings with her peers through workshops and artist talks to encourage others to reclaim digital media as a tool for personal artistic expression and social change. Since 1996, she has been performing regularly at electronic music events, noise and experimental music shows, new media festivals, and art galleries. Her performances, compositions, videos, and research work have been shown across Canada as well as in Germany and the USA.

Leeane Berger – Assistant VJ Instructor
As part of a new generation of artists, Leeane Berger is currently working in the discovery, documentation and rediscovery of all things - great and small - that make up everyday living in Saskatchewan. In 2004 Leeane set out with a project to refurbish trash from alleys, sidewalks, parks and dumpsters. This endeavor propelled her into further exploration of salvaged and found materials. Leeane works in a variety of techniques and media in attempt to correlate viewer with surroundings. Using simple electronics to bring motion to a piñata television made from found electrical cords, wire and spray paint to the exploration of substance use in adding texture and depth to her found object paintings, Leeane is on a constant look out for new tools of expression. Working most recently in video, a medium she began working with while briefly attending Concordia University in 2005, has lead to experimentation with video mixing and animation. Her videos have since morphed from canadian video art inspired short-films into grungy expressionistic mixups for teasing and pleasing the eye.

Callout: OM Festival looking for help with their annual festival

Hello Everyone!
Happy 2007!

It has been over 6 months since In:tent, and although the frost of
winter is still upon us, the days are lengthening with a gradual
solar sweetness, and we are happily reminded that the time has come
once again to begin planning this years gathering!

At this early stage of the game, we are calling out to you, our
greater and extended community, to help us with some of the most
difficult issues.

LAND

Each year finding a suitable site for the gathering is a difficult
task -- probably the most difficult. This year we want to take an
early opportunity to call out to our community and extended networks
for assistance in the hunt. YOU are part of this endeavor and we hope
you will take this responsibility seriously!

We prefer sites that are 70 or more acres, where we can all make a
great deal of noise! Crown land is the ideal neighbor, but bordering
welcoming, tolerant, or at least extremely well buffered neighbors,
could also be suitable.

Other considerations include swimming and drinking water--ideally on
site--but we are open to alternate solutions. The festival will run
from June 18th to June 24th 2007 with a few days on either end for
set up and tear down.

Our shout-out to you is a Serious Request -- Please ask your families
and extended social networks; if you meet people in bars/etc. who
mention that they own seemingly suitable land, get their phone number
and pass it this way! land@omreunionproject.org

COORDINATORS

Each year the festival is organized by a small group of committed and
industrious community members who are willing to invest their time on
a regular basis. These volunteers work individually, as well as in
groups, before, during, and after the gathering has ended.

Many of the people who have done these roles in past years are
planning to do somewhat less this year, but still be available as
mentors with helpful advice on what did and didn't work before.

Signing up to be a coordinator means you want to take a leadership
role in how the festival is planned and run. You will share
responsibility and accountability for all aspects of your chosen are
a(s) which can demand a fair amount of time. In return you'll get to
work with a bunch of crazy ORPies to help create one of the best
weeks of the year.

Sound like a lot of work? Sound like a lot of fun?

If so, please email us and let us know which areas you are interested
in. We will be having a kick-off meeting in the next few weeks and
you'll want to be there.

Here's the breakdown:

Site / land / logistics / transportation

Organization / admin / finance / gate / memberships

Entertainment programming / sound / design / build

Communications / website / membership / promotions

Edutainment / theme camps / workshops / CALM (Centre for
Alternative Living Medicine)

Health and safety / first aid / mental health

kitchen

As a side note, while we encourage you to begin planning your Theme
Camps, Art Installations, Workshops, volunteering, etc., please don't
respond to this email with those ideas. Their time will come soon,
once all the festival coordination is in place. In the meantime
please feel free to use the OMMB forums to discuss your solstice
plans with the rest of the community: http://www.omfestival.com/ommb

Thanks and look forward to working with you soon!

O R P :)
