Callout: "Testing the Waters" Video Screening at the Her-icane 2007 festival

Testing the Waters – Submission Call Deadline : Friday,, January 12,, 2007

Her-icane GoDiva, in collaboration with Paved Arts, is calling for
single-channel video and film productions with a feminist perspective.

Testing the Waters is the first in what we hope will be an annual screening
series of feminist film and video as part of the Her-icane GoDiva, the
Annual Festival of Women's Art in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The history of feminism is often delineated in terms of "waves". From the
Suffragettes to Gloria Steinem to Naomi Wolfe, these three political waves
have often been characterized by a single catch-phrase (Ban the Bra), a
sensational act or a charismatic leader in popular culture. So where is the
next wave? Are we witnessing a feminist low tide?

Testing the Waters is seeking film and video productions that reflect
current trends and concerns of contemporary feminism or examine the history
of this movement.

Applicants should apply to one of two categories: Established or Emerging.

An established artist is one who:
-has completed at least two pieces of artistic work
-has had work selected for public exhibition by jury or professional
selection
-is recognized as such by her peers.

-has completed basic training, which could be informal or an apprenticeship;
-has completed at least one artistic work.

in Saskatchewan.
-Assessing programming to ensure that goals have been met and that programs
are effective.
-Volunteer coordination skills are not necessary but would be an asset.

Successful applicants will have the following skills and abilities:
-A post secondary degree in fine arts, preferably film or media arts
related, or a commensurate level of experience.
-A strong awareness of independent film and Media arts communities across
Canada.
-Good organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines while

some HTML.
-Can work independently, yet also as part of a team
-A good and professional working personality, especially for approaching
sponsors and visiting artists.
-A driver's license

Experience with other cultural centres and artist run culture is a definite
asset, but not a necessity for the position.

The Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative is a non-profit, artist-run-centre
charity, as such, remuneration for this position would be affected by
funding support. In addition, staff are often required to provide support to
programs that extends above and beyond their job descriptions. However, this
is an excellent opportunity for an emerging film programmer.

Please forward a resume, 3 independent references, with an attached cover
letter to the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative by January 22, 2006. Resumes
will be accepted by mail, delivery or by fax, applications emailed to the

Call for Papers: "Drawing the Line"

Following the activity of the 2006 Cultural Analysis Summer Academy
(CASA) international meeting in Amsterdam (June 23 – 25), the fourth
CASAzine will explore the subject of art and direct action. In
particular, the issue seeks to investigate the tension between
hegemonic forms of knowledge concerning what constitutes art as it is
embodied by the academy versus alternative forms of creative action and
knowledge production. It is an enquiry into distinctions, limits and
possibilities, and into the positions our actions occupy in relation to
academic knowledge sets, institutions, and ultimately to other people.

"Drawing the Line" aims to examine the implications and potential of
our actions. How do aesthetic concerns affect our politics and vice
versa? Do actions utilizing mass media heighten awareness, or do they
merely contribute additional imagery to the spectacle? More basically,
to what extent is art as creative activism a productive way to work for
social change? Can ‘radical aesthetics’ productively challenge
distinctions drawn between art and activism in traditional academic
knowledge systems?

"Drawing the Line" applies to our negotiation with
institutionalization. What happens to creative forms of direct action
when they are defined as art by public bodies or art markets? How can
creative practices push agendas for political change in relation to, or
even within, those contexts? How can we take critical action that is
aware of its own position in a cultural climate of fashion, celebrity,
and shopping? How do aspects of cultural life as it is currently
conceived (i.e. the figure of a charismatic creator a.k.a. "the artist
as genius") affect our goal for leaderless, equal, collaborative forms
of art and action?

"Drawing the Line" is pertinent to how we relate to others. In all our
forms of activism including research, art, and direct action, the
nature of our engagement with others is crucial, be they involved,
hostile, critical, or indifferent. How do our activities relate to
those outside the group of people specifically engaged in this
alternative practice? How do the microcosms of dissent created in our
daily lives relate to wider social frameworks?

These questions are not new, but they are critical to framing the daily
distinctions and decision making necessary to create awareness and
change. As we move on to review, discuss, and share responses to these
questions, we hope to arrive at better questions to ask, which will in
turn create new answers in the struggle for social and political equity
and environmental protection.

** Formats **

We are seeking contributions in both text and image form. Contributions
may be a reflection on the subject of art and direct action as it was
addressed during the meeting, or it can present an entirely
perspective. Contributions may be offered by anyone, including those
who have not attended CASA meetings in the past.

** Guidelines **

- 500-3000 words.
- Language: English preferred; German, French, and Spanish understood.

** Send **

- Email is preferred: casazine2006@gmail.com. Please attach text in
.doc or .rtf; and attach image samples in low resolution .jpg.
- Surface mail: Monika Vykoukal, Peacock Visual Arts, 21 Castle Street,
AB11 5BQ, Aberdeen, Scotland. If you would like your materials
returned, please include a stamped return envelope.

** Deadline **
- 1 February 2007

zine, met at CASA Meeting 2006. We live in Canada and Scotland
respectively, and we are both curators of contemporary art.

The Cultural Analysis Summer Academy (CASA) came into existence in 2003
as an international forum that seeks to discuss the shifting functions
of academia and the scholar in a globalized society. CASA offers a
platform for people to combine efforts and information with a view
towards social transformation.

To date, CASA has organized three meetings to provide a platform for
these discussions. For more information about CASA 2004 "Acting and
Spectating", CASA 2005 "Borders, Markets, Movements", and CASA 2006

Callout: Artivistic 2007 Conference

http://artivistic.omweb.org/modules/wakka/CFP2007

A r t i v i s t i c 2 0 0 7
[ October :: Montreal ]

< CALL FOR PARTICIPATION >

[ [ [ un.occupied spaces ] ] ]

We are infiltrating all levels of society. Artists, activists, academics,
architects, bureaucrats, the homeless, anarchists, first nations, immigrants,
doctors, geeks, lawyers, teachers, witches, philosophers, clowns. Artivistic
does not only provide a platform for political artists and artistic activists,
but partakes in the very movements that work for change. In the pursuit of
temporary moments of pleasure, we move towards freedom, for resistance is
perpetual and oppression, ever-changing.

We oppose the progression of monolithic thought and work for the development of
new and dynamic forms of knowledge, exchange, representation and practices of
everyday life. We aim to stimulate the mind, the imagination, and the body. We
seek alternative models, portals unto un.occupied spaces. Artistivic moves
beyond the moment, becoming a process of contamination through interpersonal
dialogue that exceeds the event.

Building on the 2005 generation, Artivistic in 2007 will continue to ask
questions that do not leave us thinking we have resolved the issues. We
strongly suggest that you answer one, or all, of our questions with a question
of your own. Please submit your proposal for participation related (but not
restricted) to the following :

< what is indigenous ? >
The very use of the term “indigenous” presupposes a claim to the existence of
rights. The right to land. The right of return. The right to
self-determination. The right to a life with dignity. In what context does
indigenous mean something and how is it represented today? What is the
relationship between identity based on place, the land and/or territories and
the right to resources? What is indigenous in the context of globalisation,
migrations and mobility? (Perhaps the question is not what is indigenous but
how is indigenous?)

< what is a natural space ? >
The environment is in a pretty bad shape. Yet, does not typical
environmentalism often propose “solutions” which alienate the very people that
could make a difference by using a false dichotomy (natural/human-made,
natural/artificial, nature/culture) and by perpetuating the myth of a pristine
nature? Current strategies often make use of fear and guilt to provoke action,
yet will we not be helping our environment in a more efficient way once we let
go of our arrogance as humans and start living with and in the world rather
than of, and alienated from, the world?

< what is (there) to occupy ? >
The term “occupation” often inspires images of invasion, enclosure and rape.
How are spaces and bodies ruled over? What is public space, ultimately? Why do
reserves exist? To ask what is occupation is in fact to ask what is left to
occupy for occupation is more pervasive than it first appears. At the same
time, occupation echoes resistance when it comes to certain forms of
appropriation. So how does one occupy appropriation or how can one appropriate
occupation?

Your abstract or project description should be no longer than 250 words, your
bio 75 words (seriously, we will stop reading after that).

Please also include 50 words on how you will stimulate audience participation
(sorry, NO paper reading).

We welcome proposals for : roundtables, workshops, expeditions & walks,
interventions, performance, projections, show-and-tells, broadcasts, games,
visual arts, media & technology arts, street arts, informal arts, experimental
arts, is-it-art arts, etc. and any combination of the above.

We also welcome proposals having to do with personal experience, lessons
learned, or future projects that could include other participants of Artivistic
(this is a good place to start organising and collaborating).

Deadline : 15 February 2007

Please send your proposals to : participation.artivistic@gmail.com

> The Autonomous Conference
Artivistic also includes an open-source component. Participants will be able to
sign up on the day-of to hold an ad-hoc session that is not in the official
program but is fully part of the event. You can prepare in advance, but you
don’t need to submit anything.

> Co-presentations
Artivistic cannot fulfil its networking and pluralist agenda without
collaborating with existing organisations of overlapping mandates. If you are
an organisation interested in mutual aid in the context of event planning,
please contact us (considerably in advance) with your idea for an event that
you would like to organise and present with us : info.artivistic@gmail.com

> Volunteers
If you want to help us before, during and/or after the event, that would be
really nice of you! We need a lot of extra hands with promotion, billeting,
set-up, facilitation, cooking, tech, time-keeping, documenting, wrap-up, etc.
Please email us at : volunteers.artivistic@gmail.com

> Travel funding
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide funding for your travel (we are not
even getting paid to do this), but will be happy to offer any assistance with
your own steps in finding funding. On the other hand, in-house accommodation
and food will be provided to all Artivistic participants.

> Press
If you want to cover Artivistic, please send us your information by email here
: press.artivistic@gmail.com

Artivistic [ http://artivistic.omweb.org ] is a transdisciplinary three-day
gathering on the interPlay between art, information and activism. Artivistic
emerges out of the proposition that not only artists should talk about art,
academics about theory, and activists about activism. Founded in 2004, the
event aims to promote transdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue on activist
art beyond critique, to create and facilitate a human network of diverse
peoples, and to inspire, proliferate, activate.

Callout: AudioCubes Workshop with Kim Cascone!

AudioCubes – Free 2 Day Workshop and Performance

led by Kim Cascone (microsound.org, Silent Records)

and Bert Schiettecatte (Percussa)

8 & 9 Februrary 2007

Video In (1965 Main Street, Vancouver, BC)

10am – 6pm both days, with a performance on February 9th at 8pm

Vancouver New Music and Video In/Video Out offer a free two-day workshop and performance to be led by San Fancisco based electronic artist Kim Cascone and AudioCubes inventor Bert Schiettecatte.

Through hands-on exploration, participants will learn how to use AudioCubes - an interactive platform for electronic music exploration, sound design and composition. The workshops will culminate in a free public performance to be given by the participants.

Previous musical experience is not necessary, however participants must bring a laptop to the workshop with at least one USB port and either Windows XP or Mac OS X 10.3.x installed.

As space is limited, participants will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Please contact 604.633.0861 or giorgio@newmusic.org by January 31st, 2007 for more information or to register.

About AudioCubes
AudioCubes were invented, designed and implemented by Bert Schiettecatte in 2003 and represent a new platform for electronic music exploration, sound design and composition. AudioCubes are a collection of two or more plastic cubes, each containing a batterypowered sound and light processing computer. The audio and control signals generated by each of the AudioCubes are transmitted by infra-red light to other cubes placed within a proximity of 40 cm. Each cube can sample the sound from four of the cube’s faces, process it, and convert it back to analog sound to be transmitted through the same four faces. Because of the analog transmission used, light (and thus sound) can be mixed by pointing two or more cubes at a third cube. Each AudioCube contains both infra-red emitters, detectors, sound input/output connectors and a built-in omni-directional microphone. Besides the sensors and emitters each cube also contains a light source (red, green and blue) which can be controlled from the sound algorithms. By positioning the cubes relative to each other and moving them, the parameters of the algorithm (think: modular synthesizer) can be changed in real-time and in turn affect the sound. Depending on the algorithms running on the cubes and their orientation and location, an infinite number of sound synthesis techniques become possible.

Kim Cascone
Kim Cascone has a long history involving electronic music: he received his formal training in electronic music at the Berklee College of Music in the early 1970's, and in 1976 continued his studies with Dana McCurdy at the New School in New York City. In the 1980's, after moving to San Francisco and gaining experience as an audio technician, Cascone worked with David Lynch as Assistant Music Editor on both Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. Cascone left the film industry in 1991 to concentrate on Silent Records, a label that he founded in 1986, transforming it into the U.S.'s premier electronic music label. At the height of Silent's success, he sold the company in early 1996 to pursue a career as a sound designer and went to work for Thomas Dolby's company Headspace as a sound designer and composer. After a two year stint at Headspace he worked for Staccato Systems as the Director of Content where he oversaw sound design using algorithmic synthesis for video games. Since 1984, Kim has released more than 30 albums of electronic music and has recorded/performed with Merzbow, Keith Rowe, Tony Conrad, Scanner, John Tilbury, and Pauline Oliveros among others.

Cascone was one of the co-founders of the microsound list that focuses on issues concerning digital music and laptop performance (http://www.microsound.org) and has written for Computer Music Journal (MIT Press), Artbyte Magazine, Contemporary Music Review, Soundcultures and Parachute Journal.

Bert Schiettecatte
Bert Schiettecatte graduated from the computer science program at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) in July 2001 (summa cum laude). Following this, Schiettecatte applied to CCRMA, Stanford University (the Master of Arts in Music, Science and Technology program), and graduated in July 2002. From 2002-2004 Schiettecatte did research towards a PhD, and worked at ESAT (KULeuven) and DSSP (VUB / ETRO). In October 2004, he started Percussa, a small company that provides hardware and software design services. Schiettecatte invented AudioCubes in 2003.

RADIO IN ANTARCTICA

Whilst, Antarctica has never had an indigenous population, it does
now have a regular human presence. It hosts scientists from 27
different nations. In the summer more than 4000 people live in
Antarctica. Scientists tend to be located at the scientific bases
operated by their home nation. Because of the immense size of the
continent these bases tend to be far from one another. One of the
only technologies which can bridge the wide expanses of Antarctica is
radio. Whilst radio is primarily used to coordinate science
expeditions and vital activities such as air-traffic control and
search and rescue, the existence of several amateur radio stations in
Antarctica operated by radio engineers in their spare time, is
evidence that radio communication for leisure purposes is viable and
desirable. Like any amateur radio stations, those in Antarctica are
only operational sporadically, and communicate only with other
amateur radio stations, on a one-to-one basis.

Polar Radio will draw on the history of amateur radio broadcasting in
the polar regions, taking inspiration from the role radio has played
in the exploration of the Poles, and in facilitating communication
between polar inhabitants and the wider world.

One of the most important functions of Polar Radio station is be to
radiophonically link dispersed bases, creating trans-national, inter-
base connections promoting discussion and collaboration amongst the
researchers living in Antarctica. Should it prove feasible, following
this research phase, it is hoped that Polar Radio will enable
researchers to share information about the living circumstances and
weather conditions of their respective bases, and to anecdotally
communicate the results of their investigations.

In tandem with this community radio function, Polar Radio will also
be a platform for artists. Many of the Antarctic bases have artist-
in-residence programmes and regularly host artists in-situ. Polar
Radio hopes to make it possible for artists in residence to
communicate their work to the residents of Antarctica. It will pro-
actively encourage artists to create audio-based art (sound art, new
music, radio drama and other audio based practices) for broadcast,
thus posing new artistic challenges for artists living in Antarctica.

It is also hoped that Polar Radio will broadcast creative programmes
produced outside Antarctica. Using internet-based systems, and
posted CDs, we hope to enable an interface between artists and
musicians based around the world and the residents of Antarctica.

It is envisioned that the eventual programme of Polar Radio may be a
combination of news reports from the various Antarctica bases
authored by researchers, music programmes compiled by researchers,
audio art, music, news and magazine programmes, sound art and radio
art documentaries and audio-based art created by artists in residence
at the Antarctic bases.

TRANSMIT YOUR MESSAGE IN ANTARCTICA

We are in the process of compiling programmes for broadcast. The
internet connection at the present South African base in Antarctica
is not fast enough for the crew to download sound material to
broadcast. But we do want to broadcast music made by musicians and
sound artists, radio plays, documentaries, and any other sonically
fascinating ephemera.

So, we need your help!

If you have ever wanted a piece of music you have made, or even just
a piece of music you like, heard in Antarctica, now is your chance.
Make a CD and send it to: Siphiwe Ngwenya / I-TASC
c/- Pitch Black Productions, 7 Prince Street, Gardens, Cape Town
8001, South Africa

DEADLINE: 10 JANUARY 2007

There is not much time between now and when the plane leaves, so
anything you can copy onto CD and post, would be gratefully received.
